re: Harris in 2014 should be reason enough to temper expectations for Etling

Etling is not Harris. I am not sure why ones struggles translate to another?
It is like saying - since Drew tore his arm up and became a Super Bowl winning QB - the next guy that tears up his arm should expect the same.
Doesn't really make sense.

Good Lord. How many times are people going to remind us of this situation to "temper expectations."
Yes, circumstances are similar, but life doesn't work that way. Just because it's a similar start doesn't mean the outcome will be the same.

We hope and hype because hope and hype are all we have left.

Harris looked just as good if not better against Miss St. and New Mexico St. than Etling did against JSU.
If you truly believe this then there's no point in even having a discussion. They couldn't have looked more different. It's not a question of better or worse, it's a question of how.

Any expectations should be tempered. Les is still the HC.

Anyone with eyes can see the difference between them on the field. Etling came in and was able to get plays called and complete a forward pass. Give me him all day.

I'm not saying Etling won't be decent, but I was at the New Mexico st game and I was convinced that Harris was the future. He was night and day better than Jennings leading 7 straight TD drives. We will have to wait until Saturday to see if it plays out the same way. We simply don't know.

Could you break this down with gifs, please?

That legitimately cracks me up because I probably watch more film of these guys than most on here. I've presented objective criticism and praise when warranted. I focus on quantifiable data when possible. I worry about the end result, not how it looks getting there. I've got people in this thread telling me that Etling against JSU did things that Harris cannot or does not do and that is complete horse shite.
This thread wasn't meant to shite on Etling, it was meant to counter all the ideas that Harris is done for good. That is incredibly unlikely and our history helps support that argument.

It is perfectly fine to be excited about his potential. The point is that so many on this board and even in this thread choose to do so at the expense of another player on the team. Damn near every Etling comment is followed up by some sort of criticism of BH, and it is often baseless criticism. You see shite like this everywhere:
Etling makes all the right reads and Harris doesn't have the mental capacity to do the same.
No problem with the first part, but what is the point of the second part? We don't know enough about Etling yet to even know if the first part is true, but the optimism is fine. The second part does nothing more than sling more shite at a player. People talk on here as if enough shite from the fans will convince the coaches to make a change one way or the other.
That is the point of the OP - anointing Etling out of optimism is fine, but doing so while shitting on Harris or anyone else is what drives me nuts.

What will hold Etling back is not his skill set. It will be Les Miles offense and the play of the offensive line. What holds Harris back is himself.

Probably true at this point. He reminds me of a pitcher who is struggling to find his control and starts trying to guide the ball and things only get worse from there. I'm not convinced the staff does a good job of hiding his deficiencies either, and that compounds the problem.

This is stupid considering the small sample size from Etling. You're basically setting up a win win for Etling without holding him accountable for his play.

I'm convinced they don't do enough to hide his weaknesses. It's like he has the yips are something I don't know man we have waited so long for decent QB play hopefully Etling can give us some. But Les and Cam have to call a game without fear of the position.

Agreed. There are legitimate reasons to be concerned and optimistic after the JSU performance. Hopefully a larger sample size will give us a better idea this weekend.

Huh? Etling clapped a bit and seemed to have some energy, which is different than the Harris we've seen this year but is very similar to what we saw in 2014. Other than that, I'm not sure what you're trying to say.
Etling having better footwork or mechanics is irrelevant if he still makes poor throws. Harris having poor footwork or mechanics is irrelevant if he makes good throws, and vice versa. At the end of the day it is about the results.

Etling throws more than Dragons every passing play
