During the Battle of the Somme, the British launch a major offensive against the Germans, employing tanks for the first time in history. At Flers Courcelette, some of the 40 or so primitive tanks advanced over a mile into enemy lines but were too slow to hold their positions during the German counterattack and subject to mechanical breakdown. However, General Douglas Haig, commander of Allied forces at the Somme, saw the promise of this new instrument of war and ordered the war department to produce hundreds more.

I missed the part of your post that is fear mongering about the Russians. Can you point it out to me?

Question for you Darth, do you feel like a sitting duck in that thing? I know they pretty fast now, but seems like it's an easy target.

As soon as it's hit by an Abrams the top flies off and a huge fire ensues.

Well on the one hand you are for sure going to be engaged by every weapon on the battlefield the instant you expose yourself.

But on the other hand, most of those weapons can't do much of anything to you.

The key was in having a good crew that knows how to fight the tank.

The T-14 is the first major departure of old Soviet tank design since the introduction of the T-55. It's a pretty radical design in that it concentrates the crew all in the lower hull.

From what I understand an emphasis has been placed on crew survivability with the T-14 which for the Russians is totally different than their tank design doctrine going back to before WWII. The Russians have always concentrated on building simple to maintain, tough, reliable tanks with a massive gun that can be built in massive quantities. Their tanks for decades have tended to be lighter than Western tanks but usually with a bigger, more powerful gun.

The T-14 maintains the big gun but along with that also has strong armor, advanced fire control, ATGM countermeasures, and overall looks to be a potent MBT.

I don't know where you'd get that idea. If anything the Russians are known for building huge numbers of their tanks.

T-90: 3,200
T-80: 5,404
T-72: 25,000+
T-64: 13,000
T-62: 22,000+
T-55: 80,000 - 100,000 est

The Russians have a straight up tank fetish. They love them some tanks like a woman loves her some high heeled shoes.

As for the T-14, they've already built over 100 and plan on building 2,300 between now and 2020.

Whew! I checked Poli Talk first this morning and when I didn't see Darth's "Tank Centennial" thread over there I got worried.

With great angst I surf over to the OT and with great relief, I find this very important thread.

BBC World News reported on this last evening our time but morning time over there. They mentioned that there is a newly completed replica of one of these Somme landships on display.

Fun fact: the Landship obtained the moniker "tank" from a British intelligence effort to hide development of the Landship. Whenever large components of the new weapon were transported by railway, they were covered with tarps and called "water tanks" or "cisterns".

Can you imagine being under attack and radioing back to HQ with the warning: "SIR, we are under attack by German cisterns! CISTERNS ! "

I've always wondered how the war would have turned out if the Germans had realized the importance and the potential from the tank. They did build the A7V tank later in the war....

... Imagine had they build this monster in large numbers and had them available as early as 1916 or even 1917.

BTW, there is actually a running replica still out there....

My wife's great-great uncle was killed at the Battle of the Somme on September 17. I wonder if he got the chance to see one of these beasts before the Huns got him.

Very cool Amazing the advancement and adoption of tanks 1916 on. Not sure on accuracy, but think I remember reading somewhere that by 1918 the Germans could only field 30-40 front-line tanks versus over 3,000 for the allies.

Those numbers sound about right just off the top of my head. The Germans really missed the boat in WWI when it comes to tanks. They built the A7V in small numbers in 1918 and also had a few captured allied tanks. But that's really about it.

That turret has a massive profile.
