Man, y'all sure are fired up about the racism thing.
I don't think the story itself is about "southern backward folks are terrorizing the uppity interracial couple who bought the old farmhouse". The "real" Matt character said that at first he thought it was about race. But I think that was to show he was looking for the "easy" explanation as to what was happening.
As we go on I think it will be that the story is about the locals are the "keepers" of that house/land/lost colony and will do anything to drive them away regardless of what race they are. And the cops being disinterested seem to be more of a "that fricking place is haunted and we don't want any part of it" than "screw you black guy, you're on your own".
I will say the gang initiation bit with it being a bunch of white kids knocking out a black guy was eyerolling.
Did it look like the auctioneer was some kind of pastor or priest to y'all? Maybe he was hoping that if the house was kept away from the locals that it might stop whatever evil has been happening there?
And we got brief glimpses of Dennis O'Hare (bearded guy in the video running from the pigman), Kathy Bates (colonial woman with the cleaver that Shelby hit with her car), and Wes Bentley (one of the colonials with a torch in the woods).
Also, after watching "American Crime Story" it was a bit jarring to see Marcia Clark married to OJ Simpson.
Overall, I enjoyed it. I liked the show within a show format and I'm glad it seems to be more straight horror and less over the top grossness (no demon rape will a drill!) like "Hotel" was.

a big theory during all the promos was that a cult would be involved in the storyline somehow I'm still thinking that all this will be centered around a cult maybe the missing roanoke settlers were part of a cult and the three hillbilly guys are as well later in the season we'll get a rosemary's baby kind of vibe

I believe this ties into the first season when Billie Dean and Violet tried to use the Roanoke Spell to get rid of that gay couple

I like the format and style this season. I think they may have shown too much in the 1st episode, though.
I quit watching last season after about 3 or 4 episodes.
-Wasn't scary, mostly just gross
-Every dude was a full on beta an/or gay
-too much gay sex
-too much rape
-gay rape
-Gaga
I swear after 3 episodes, I figured the season was about gay sex and how everyone wants to frick Gaga. Gaga is about as boner deflating as Hillary Clinton.
I think last season was dedicated to gay dudes, can't imagine who else it would be targeting.

I don't think this season has a racism focus.
Seems like he said he thought it was a motivation

I don't think it will have a racism focus per say, but just in the first episode, we have white gang playing knockout game on black male, because that happens so much. The rest was mostly Matt's assumptions about the south. We were made to believe that the white southern cops wouldn't actually help an interracial couple (I mean they did just get rid of the confederate flag after all), racist rednecks, blah blah.
Now, the locals very well may have other motives as has been said previously to trying to get rid of them, but as far as the first episode is concerned, racism was painted as a huge factor in everything.

Looked white to me, but hwo knows.
But seriously, will be interesting to see where they go with everything. Like every season, I can get behind the premise. Let's just hope they don't go full retard (not holding my breath)

I'll bite. At least it has a different feel with the format. I wasn't overly excited about what I saw, but I'll give it a shot.

saw parts of it
the three main characters are still alive to tell the story correct?
kinda tamps the suspense down a bit

I had the same thought.
One welcome change is that they went back to season one's formula. The main characters are the normal people being tormented.
Every other season has been about the monsters instead of the victims.

I don't think there is any doubt that house is haunted along with the redneck KKK cult people. So far so good, I like it.

Funny how they used a gang of white people to play the knockout game on a black guy

I guess my only criticism is knowing the main characters survive. So it takes away that thrill of the unknown.
I liked the premise. I love old colonist folk lore and I hope it goes into that, especially the Roanoke colony. Though not expecting much from the people that ruined the LaLaurie story.

one of the rednecks was Chaz Bono
thank god, Sonny isn't alive to see what has become of his daughter

Oh wow, good catch. Just finished watching. This season seems like it may be more like season 1 of straight scares/creepy stuff. I liked the costumes and characters of last season's hotel but it never actually scared me. Freakshow had potential with the clown but lost me after that. Coven was cool because of the setting and costumes and characters but never scared me, except for the opening credits/music which I think has been the scariest of them all. Asylum never really got my attention. I think this season has potential to be like season 1 with some culty stuff thrown in.
