re: F 250 vs. F 350. What should I be looking for?

I can't answer that as I have not bought a trailer yet. I was just trying to get a truck that would pull whatever I want.

Tundra can pull the space shuttle.

My 3/4 ton gasser has pulled 250k miles worth of heavy shite. They're badass these days.
My next truck will likely be a single wheel 1 ton gasser.

Pulling a 5-10k camper all around the country, I'm going diesel for the power and mpg

This doesn't make any sense. Is your budget unlimited? You are talking about a truck as a tool right now, it doesn't always make sense to have the biggest tool on the block just to have it.
It's obviously easier to have more truck than you need, but that doesn't mean it's best. You can pull a lot of trailer with a 1/2 ton gasser and if you are driving most often without pulling that is the vehicle that makes most sense.

Get the 6.7l 2015 or newer and don't look back! You won't even know that camper is behind you. Unbelievable power

my uncle pulls a 9k dry weight 5th wheel camper with his 2wd short backseat type tundra.

You can drag around some heavy shite with a half ton, especially with trailer brakes and 5th wheel.
New half tons are monsters compared to what they were even 10 years ago, much more so if you go back 20.
The advantage of an HD truck has nothing to do with horsepower. They're heavier and stiffer trucks with much more stopping power and less power density so they'll last longer doing it. I personally think you get about twice the vehicle for your money compared to a half ton.

Eh, that extra power makes it much easier and takes stress off of the tranny. I'd rather be spinning 1250 in overdrive than 3500 in 3rd

I think OP needs to mildly decide upon what tow range his camper will be in. No point in buying a truck that can tow 12k lbs if you buy a camper weight 7500.

Why would you want to tote around at 100% capacity all of the time?

"all the time"... some people go camping 95% of the time maybe once or twice a month usually within an hour where you live. So all the time might be here and there. I don't know what OP plans to do. And a half ton towing 7-8k is not 100%. Half ton would do quite fine.

He is leaving out a lot of variables, but also the terrain he plans on driving. Pulling in the mountains =/= pulling from LA to FL

Higher RPM is easier on everything. It's less torque, and torque is what wears shite out and breaks things. Running loaded around peak engine torque is very hard on the driveline and engine.
You'll also burn less fuel at higher RPM in many loaded situations.

If you towed at 100% capacity every mile on a light duty truck, it would likely die an early, smokey, leaky, miserable death pretty quickly. They're not built to be anywhere close to that duty cycle.
Posted on 9/12/16 at 10:05 am to DownshiftAndFloorIt
Higher rpm is less torque? What kind of torque curves you looking at breh? Maybe from 3250-3500,but not from 500-3500. Plus the tranny can be locked out. Those axles and u joints can handle a shite ton of power though (750+hp)
Posted on 9/12/16 at 10:09 am to Hammertime
It takes X horsepower to move whatever at a given speed. Producing X horsepower at higher RPM is less torque and more revs. Less torque = less strain on driveline stuff. It's a higher cycle count which does wear out certain things faster like bearings, but for the most part it's much easier on everything to be higher in the powerband.
The torque curve is for wide open throttle. You're operating on a load curve, which is exponential but usually pretty close to linear where the vehicle actually operates.

Get rid of that EcoBoost.
Go with a diesel

I appreciate all of the replies. I will probably just stick with the eco for now. But I really like the bigger trucks. I will probably get a smaller bunkhouse around 8500 gvwr. If I go larger in the future, I will look at the bigger trucks.
