Considering the social stigma surrounding the freedman at that time, and the pervasive mistreatment of blacks before and after the civil war, I'm and many are inclined to believe those men weren't mostly fighting because they say blacks as equals, but more so for the unity of our states.

Shouldn't Africa pay the bill of that also since they sold slaves for 400 years? Hell, if my descendants literally "sold me out" I might want to hold them somewhat accountable.
