long article ... essentially shows a fairly in-depth statistical study of results by lane and suggests there's an unfair advantage in certain types of races ... just thought statistical geeks might enjoy ... LINK washpost article ...

The article tries to act like this is some unknown thing. Why did they think the middle lanes are always preferred?
This is something even I knew before this article and I only watch swimming once every four years

I think this falls into the "they knew about it but not why" category.

NCAA needs to check Auburn's pool.

I wonder if they have checked left-handed vs right-handed swimmer's times in the outside lanes. Come at me bro if I just solved the mystery while eating a PB&J

But did you read the article? It's a pretty interesting read.
It does not discuss the middle lanes being the lanes with better visibility of the entire field or that the better swimmers usually end up in the middle. It actually claims that there is a current aiding and hindering each side of the pool depending on which direction they are going at the time. Which is a huge deal in the 50m race. Shows where this phenomena has not occurred at other pools/events.

Doesn't matter. Ledecky still one by a good 11 seconds.
