If your vehicle has a towing package, make sure to keep a hitch in it

Just saved the back end of my truck. The big rig that hit me. Not so much.

A hitch and ball can bend the laws of physics?

That way you can feel your way around backing up. When you hit another car, you know it's time to stop. Brilliant!

It helps with the small hits, but if you really get rear ended your fricked with or without the hitch.
You might want to check your frame where the towhitch attaches.

It has happened to me twice. Second time was getting off the interstate at Siegen and the lady behind me ran straight into the back of me. My ball went straight through her grill and when she backed up, the entire thing ripped off. My painted rear bumper was untouched so I just left her to deal with it on her own.

In some states, it is illegal to drive with the ball insert installed UNLESS you are actually towing. Reason cited is that it can come loose and fall out and become a serious hazard.

I got a 4' long hitch on my King Ranch. Busting radiators left and right.

is this illegal in LA?
I always leave mine on. Cop in PA told me it was illegal. I told him to write the ticket. He did. Had to get it fixed by a buddy cop.
this saved me once before when a dumb blonde drunk off her arse rear ended my chevy

I bet your truck nuts swung back and slapped the bumper of the big rig causing damage to his bumper

Has two small rear-end incidents from retarded college kids. Both times, I drove off fine and their cars were fricked up

Present good advice.
People steal them though.

I don't keep mine in bc I'm afraid I'm going to back into someone.

Please don't. It causes more damage to whatever you hit/hits you. Yeah, you back into something with a bare hitch? Now you're liable for increased damage.
Plus cars are already at a disadvantage if one has a collision with your lifted truck. Trailer hitches don't give like deforming bumpers do and having one on when you don't need it may cause additional injury to the other party--or even yourself, if you get rear-ended hard enough to screw up your back or your neck.
Just don't. Your anecdotal evidence doesn't say anything good about hitches except that they increase the damage that the other vehicle suffers.

I always do. Mainly for parking. If someone parks real close to me, I take it out and that extra 6" is always enough to get me out.

I agree 100%. got rear ended and not a scratch on mine but a hole in the bumper of the front end of the car that hit me. I always keep my hitch in.

In high school I had a 2001 Chevy blazer. That trailer hitch has saved me twice.
