Get on the ferry and go over to Isla Mujeres for a day. You might wish you'd stayed there instead.
On Isla Mujeres
Punta Sur - where the sun first rises on Mexico
Hidalgo Street - restaurants and shopping - nice street
Playa Norte - beautiful beach on the north end of the island
There's plenty more but that will get you started.

It's an incredible little island and very affordable. A taxi to anywhere on the island is a $5 fare. You can also rent golf carts by the day or week. If you stay in Playa Norte area you really don't need a golf cart as you can walk to a ton of good restaurants and taxi anywhere else.
My wife gets pissed at me when I tell other people about it.
We'll be there at the end of February for 10 days.

Trip to Chichen Itza Mayan complex. It's about 130 miles West of Cancun, a good highway connects the two. You can also charter a light plane to bring & take you there, that's around $1k per person.
If you rent a car and go, it's a bit over two hours' drive one way. Nice four-laned toll road. There's a colonial city of Valladolid on the way (pretty close to Chichen Itza). Interesting architecture there and it's a nice place to eat Lunch or Dinner. It's worth a stopover.
Hotter than balls in September but that's a given for that region of Mexico.

I've been to three Secrets around Cancun but not that one. Let us know what you think.

For atleast one day, rent a car and go to Tilum. About 1.5 hours south of Cancun. Dont be scared about car rental, its literally one road all the way there. Rentals are arond 25-30 dollars a day. Try and get to tilum early in order to see the ruins, then check out some Cenotes, which is a terrific experience. If you go to Tilum eat at El Camello Jr. It will be an open air restaurant on the left as you drive into town, you cant miss it. Scuba Diving/snorkeling is much cheaper to book here than in Cancun, so wait to do it when you get there, as opposed to booking online. They also have a night snorkel in Tilum that is highly recommended. Tilum is also where many of the "turtle hatchings" and egg laying's happen, pretty neat experience if you catch it.
If it is still Whale Shark season, that is very highly recommended. One of those once-in-a-lifetime things. If you plan on only staying at a resort, all of them are nice. I prefer Hyatt Zilara and Iberostar in Cancun. If you plan on getting out a bit, go to Isla. If you dont want to just relax on a beach and get drunk, head to Tilum for a couple of days.

On Isla Mujeres
I spoke w/ my travel agent and she mentioned that around 5-6pm they close the streets on Isla Mujere. Shops and restuarants close up and only few remain open. Now, this was over 10 years ago.
Is this still the case today? We not exactly looking for peace and quiet on our last night in Mexico. Figured staying close to Cancun would provide better nightly entertainment.
Thank you.

I dont know about Secrets Capri but at Secrets The Vine in Cancun there is a resort employee with a computer in the corner of their sports bar taking wagers. Went during football season, it was fun.

As far as nightlife, our group of 6 had a BLAST at Coco Bongo a few years ago.

Your travel agent is not keeping up. We had dinner as late as 9 pm and hidalgo street was still hopping.

Yes, I needed one. I don't have time to search the web. There are so many resorts to pick from. Plus, she found a great deal at Secrets Capri. Ocean view suite for 5 nights for 2 @ $1,500.

I'll be staying at Secrets Aura Cozumel all next week. It's also going to be my first time in Mexico. Anyone have experience there?
