Matrix question

Been watching Matrix today on BBC and it never occurred to me to think about what the tunnels are that the ships travel through. Any ideas?
Why do the machines want to get rid of humans? They need humans to survive. Why not just allow humans that escape the matrix to live in peace and have a truce of no battles?
Why give humans their fake existence? They wouldn't know the difference just being an energy source

It's all pretty much explained in the movies.
Correct me if I'm wrong but:
1) City sewers and tunnels.
2) the whole thing started with a war of extermination between man and machine and the fighting is just a continuation of that.
There are humans in Zion that were never in the Matrix. Those would be the decedents of the people that had been fighting the machines for generations. And if humans in the matrix are their power source, why would the machines let them escape?
3) Fake existence makes them complacent. Cant even consider being human batteries = less chance of revolt.

It's implied due to the initial war, but the machines actually know where they are. It's really all a lie to keep humanity in check.

Because humans would continue to wage war on them. That's why they allow them to escape, let them think they're effectively fighting them, and then purge them with a human they've specifically designed to start it all anew. They're pretty good at this, at least until Smith changed the status quo.

I never thought the machines let anyone escape. The way I see it when Neo was woken up he became damaged goods and was released from his pod into some bottomless tank of water where he would've drowned if he weren't rescued.
He wasn't let go by the machines, he was discarded. I think.

They are a hell of a lot larger than any sewer or tunnel, and Zion used the Earth's core as a power source.

No, they're just descended from people who escaped the Matrix. Zion had been destroyed dozens of times before the start of the series. They'd been going at it for thousands of years.

Did you see the second one? This is literally point blank explained to the audience by the Architect.

Doesn't Trinity explicit state that's what they are?

Why use humans at all? If machines are so smart why not a nuclear source? Humans will always try to escape or wage war

Morpheus looks directly into the camera in the first movie while talking to Neo and explains they are old sewer and subway tunnels.

The humans that do escape don't live in peace, they actively try to fight and kill the machines. No peace can be reached while the machines use humans as fuel.
Morpheus explains this into the camera in a red leather chair talking to Neo. Tank confirms that humans, matrix born or otherwise, will always fight.

Agent Smith directly and explicitly explains this into the camera when he's trying to break Morpheus mind.
Did you even see the movie?

This is a legit question that's not explained.
But I think it's a way of saying frick you to the humans.
Humans created them, no doubt exploited them, and then went to war with them.
Humans give out sufficient energy to power the machines, so why not control and frick them forever.

Humans are a renewable energy source, and during the initial human/robot war the fleshy folks created a barrier to prevent solar energy from being used. That left the robots with inefficient resources like nuclear/fossil fuels, so they chose to adapt power needs to whatever useful resource was on hand.
Oh, and the robots practice guided evolution on the humans. Pretty much allow them to become insurgents knowing that the machines will ultimately win. Until Smith screwed things up, that is.

If you've seen the prequel to the series "The Animatrix", you might be on to something

That is explained.
The machines cannot use the Sun.
The machines cannot use the heat in the core, because that is where the humans actively fight back. So, the best option is to keep farming.

Yeah, the war with the machines part of The Animatrix was pretty good.
However, I never could get over the fact that humanity would permanently darken the sky. They would have had to be very, very desperate to take that step considering that this move would have destroyed the planet regardless of the outcome of the war.

Hardly. The Architect said five times. Also, Morpheus said in the first movie the year was closer to 2199

so other than the frick you to the humans, is there any legit reasoning for the matrix? If humans are just used for energy, there is really no purpose being served by having them live in VR.

I think this is the correct interpretation - the machines actually build-in the possibility (although low) of folks getting out and actually allow the Zion rebels in and out. They also create the agents to root them out, but this conflict in purpose and intent is why Smith goes insane (similar to HAL in 2001).
The machines maintain this delicate balance, a "phony" war from their perspective to keep things in balance, while the rebels think they're fighting an actual war with actual consequences.

Coal power
Oil power
Nuclear power
Fission power
Etc etc.
And wouldnt a huge animal be better than a human?
Like a bunch of elephants?

You would think so.
I guess it would depend on how the machines are using humans as 'batteries'. Is that ever explained?
You would think there would always be a better option that would be less of a pain in the arse than keeping humans around.

This is where I may be filling in the blanks that the Wachowski sisters didn't necessarily intend - of course it cannot be pure electrical energy from the body - I can't see how they would get much of a return on the investment that way. Maybe it is disposal of the bodies at the end of life, but, again, the reproductive rate wouldn't support that either.
If it was just our bodies, it would make more sense to either use an animal OR terminate higher brain functions very early. I think it is implicitly our higher brain activity - something that lower order animals don't possess and another reason to manufacture a realistic "faked" environment for those in the matrix. Thus this drives the cold war between Zion and the machines - they want to keep folks plugged in and they can't afford to do it any other way than they're doing it.
