When you win a game 45-40, you didn't win with your defense. End of story. I don't give a shite if you forced two fricking punts.
Yeah I know. It's sorta like saying UGA's "defense" was the reason why they beat us in that 2013 back and forth because they forced us to punt once or twice.
Rick, go on the SECrant and see if Alabama fans think their elite defense won the game for them. This has been discussed over there several times and just recently a whole thread devolved into them talking about how Watson ripped them a new a-hole. They know the reason they won that game was because Clemson left freaking TE Howard wide open multiple times and Saban tried and Alabama successfully recovered an onside kick.
Ohio State definitely didn't have an elite defense either. They are just lucky that Oregon played them crippled. Oregon was without their #2 and #3 WR along with their TE who had 25 receptions, over 400 yards, and 6 TDs in only 10 games. Mariota still went off putting up 333 yards at 9.0 ypa completing 65% of his passes with 2 TDs and 1 int, along with 40 yards on the ground. What would he have done with all those playmakers he didn't have for the title game?
Auburn damn sure didn't have an elite defense vs FSU or Oregon, but with both games going down to the wire and 1 win 1 loss, I'd say elite defense is no better than having an elite offense.
IMO, as long as one side is elite and the other side is descent, you stand the best chance at playing in the national championship game. It doesn't matter which side it is.

Defense wins championships.

Defense.
Offense hinges on one player, the qb. He has a bad game or gets hurt. Offense struggles.

I dont care what they think. If their defense doesnt get back to back punts then they lose. They were losing. Their 2 forced punts were that last forced punts of the game. No their defense didnt play really well but their 2 forced punts allowed them to take lead and never relinquish it.
I agree they didnt play well but they made 2 stops when they had to have them . without those stops they lose.
Ohio state was damn near top 10. I reaponded to a post saying they weren't that good.

Without their offense scoring on those possesions, those forces points don't mean a Damn thing.
It goes both ways. That's why football is the ultimate team sport.
You need both to win.

Ok. All i said was the better defense won and made the last forced that last 2 punts of the game. A poster said Bama's defense had nothing to do with it.

Elite defense is the easy answer, but to win a championship the team must still have a good offense.

This is the answer. But add in an average special teams. Which, as of today, LSU is not close to having.

Elite defense. If they can't score we can't lose.

Offense was average. Insane special teams complemented the insane defense, but ultimately LSU was defeated by a team with an elite defense and a better offense.

Our qbs put up 20tds-4 ints both over 61% completion and both had abq rating over 138.
We were 2nd in the sec in offensive tds per game.
We were 2nd in the sec in passing yards per attempt.
3rd in offensive yards per play.
2nd in 3rd down conversion %
Our offense wasnt just average in 2011.

The 2011 offense wasn't flashy but was VERY effective... A pretty good offense...

It's a matter of how you prefer to torture your opponent. Elite offenses will leave your opponent feeling dejected, aloof, and uninterested. "What's the point?" Elite defense will leave your opponent feeling helpless and overall uncomfortable. Your opponent will be on edge the entire time just waiting for that shimmering light, that last gasp of air, but guess what? It isn't coming, and they have no choice but to sit and take it. Up to you really.

The total YPG don't reflect the fact that they had awesome field position every time they got the ball.
Offense can't help it if they only have to go 46 yards to score every possession. Our defense and ST both took away from our offense's total yards by being so awesome.
