As far as winning games then of course Defense. As far as being actually fun to watch, I've at least been entertained when the Saints have had average years. Watching us try to throw a forward pass for the majority of the last 8 years makes you want to stick needles in your eyeballs.

Winning games is more entertaining to me no matter how you go about it. The Saints offense is fun to watch but watching their defense play is more frustrating then watching LSU's offense.

There is nothing more demoralizing to a team than knowing you can't stop the other teams offense.

To me it seems having an elite defense is more reliable. Defense travels and has a lesser drop off in inclement weather. If you have an elite defense then you have a shot in every game. Offense is a lot about timing which can easily be thrown off in certain situations.

This is actually the correct reason that the answer is defense.

If the D plays with intensity, they'll perform every game. And they can force turnovers which can change the game.

Offenses are more risky - fumbles, interceptions, if the QB gets dinged then the entire offense is changed, weather, wind, just the QB having an off day, etc.

So defense is more reliable, and that's why I'd prefer it.

An Elite Defense and a mediocre offense will always be better than an Elite Offense and a mediocre defense....

LSU 2013 is the perfect example. We put up 42 on UGA but gave up 45.

Look at teams like Oregon. They put up 50+ a game all season, and when they play a great defense, they stall, and their defense simply can't stop the average offenses.

Elite defense and its not close.
Elite defense has the ability to not only stop an offense but they have the ability to score points. Elite offense isnt really affecting the other teams offense.
Also our ball controlled offense actually helps our defense a good bit. Even when our offense sucks we usually have a high TOP which doesnt lowers the amount of time your defense is on the field.
One of the major drawbacks a HUNH offense has is the ability to to 3 &out and put your defense right back on the field. When lsu goes 3&out the use of the entire play clock at least gives your defense a breather.

The sec programs with cinsistency are programs that are built around defense.
We have seen what high powered offenses have done in the sec and its not sustainable success.

Agreed. A road game doesnt really effect an elite defense while ans elite offense can be effected by playing a road game. We have seen it happen time and time again in Tiger Stadium

Because we were playing an elite defense

You have to have a very good offense to win. Teams WILL score on you, even with an elite defense.

This just isnt true. 2015 bama is an easy example. You dont need a great offense to win a title.

Where are these elite offenses that win titles?

Even 2010 auburn had an elite run defense and were ranked really high in turnovers.

You dont see elite offenses with average defenses win titles while you repeatedly see elite defenses with average offenses win titles.

2011 is a great example. Both CG participants had amazing defenses with above average offenses and they destroyed every team they faced except when they played each other.

we have to acknowledge that in the NFL there have been teams with very good defense and offense.

i personally feel best when the defense is spectacular. stuff them.

Yea I mean look at the Denver defense from last year.... Elite defense that essentially won them the superbowl. Their offense could score points, no doubt, but their defense was 'leet.

Look at the 2011 LSU and bama teams. Both teams could easily put up points and played multiple teams that could put up a ton of points. But those two defenses were on another level, and it showed.

So the offense has to be able to put up points, no doubt; but give me an elite defense any day.

Yep. Its true at every level of football from HS to the NFL.
When was the last time a nfl team won a superbowl with a crap defense?
When was the last time a cfb program won a title with a crap defense?

Of course youd like to have an elite offense but if you have to choose between them, then its elite defense every time. IMO anyway

All I care about is LSU's defense becoming elite again. Defense wins championships!!

ok, but don't expect an elite defense to start the year. we are making a transition and it will take awhile before the players are able to play w/o overthinking. also, we are short of true LB's and are using DE's instead. that's great to stop the run but I question their ability to cover receivers when necessary.

Disagree due to the simplicity of Aranda's scheme...

you can disagree all you want. in fact, I hope to hell you are correct and i'm wrong.

i'm just a "show me" guy. I tend not to be susceptible to hype or group thinking. however, it is a fact that we have an outstanding DC and we have very talented players so I agree that we MAY field an elite D this year. it damn sure has be better than last year. and add an improved ST and this should greatly improve our offense by taking some pressure off of them.

Thats how just about every 3-4 is run.

Traditional DE in 4-3 usually get moved to olb in 3-4.

Most colleg DE arent big enough to play de in a 3-4. This is what made Tyson Jackson so coveted coming out of LSU. He was a 4-3 de that could play de in a 3-4.
The only position i was worried about was NT in 3-4 especially after Godchaux went down but now we have a prototypical NT in Valentine.

LSU didn't play in the last NC game.

Clemson put up 40+ points on a very elite Alabama defense. It was offense that won that game.

Elite defense and it isn't close.

ETA: It's actually very, very simple. To win titles, particularly SEC titles, you have to stop the run.

The only outlier in the last 8 years is 2013 Auburn, and we all know how lucky their run was. Every other year the SEC champion was in the top 15 nationally against the run, and 6 of them were top 10. Not one of them gave up more than 110 YPG, on average.

But you're looking at one game. Alabama is the national Champs bc they had an amazing defense. Their offense wasn't elite, but came thru in the clutch
