This was way before my time and had never heard of it until today. Why did this proposed project get shot down after the '83 flood? Was it too costly or too much opposition?

Darlington Dam, also referred to as Lake Mentz. is a gravity type dam situated in the Sundays River, near Kirkwood, in Eastern Cape, South Africa. It was established in 1922 and was renovated in 1952. The dam has a capacity of 187,000,000 cubic metres (6.6×109 cu ft), with a 35.3 metres (116 ft)-high wall. Its primary purpose is for irrigation, industrial and domestic use.

I remember the "Damn the Dam" bumper stickers... I recall most people from the area (west of Clinton) really wanted the dam and badass lake. A few landowners were all in against it and finally it went away in favor of the Comite diversion canal. Sucks, that lake would've been sweet.

Same reason the Comite diversion canal never happened....Louisiana politicians suck.

It requires a ton of land and people didn't want to give up their land.

Because this isn't Texas. We can't get public works projects done like that.

Officially the army corps or engineering group said the soil was not sound enough wink wink.
I heard rumors of Edwards and his buddies bought up the land around it and like some said the locals got pissed.
The comite diversion turning into a joke and will never be finished.
At this point the need to stop funding it and move the money into the Darlington project.
The Amite River commission needs to be investigated.

The plan was there along with a fund set up. Someone stole the funds from the account. That someone was rescued from their attic this past weekend. Should have let his sorry arse drown
