In Hindsight how much do you Andrew McCutchen probably regrets his contract.

He signed a 6 - $51.5 that would take him from 2012 to 2017. Now I now he is financially set for life but if he hadn't signed that deal he would have been a free agent last winter and at age 28 probably would have signed a 200 + million deal just based on how good his 2012-2014 years were and even 2015 wasn't that bad as he was still a 4.9 WAR player. Can you remember a guy who passed up as much money as this guy has by taking a pre arbitration contract

I can't blame him. Dude loves Pittsburgh and wanted to give a 'hometown' discount, just like Trout.

Trout still got way more than Andrew though. 144 vs 51.5 over the same amount of years

Trout is also the best player in the league lol

ETA: I see where you're coming from though.

this hasnt been abnormal the last 10 years or so. Ryan Braun, Evan Longoria come to mind.

he's still going to get paid on his 2nd deal.

Longoria is a good example. Braun was really only 'elite' when he juiced, but he's having another good year, i mean he's batting .322.

I think he bounces back with a strong last month or so, will still make over 100m in his career.

Saw a thread a few days ago about Hispanics having passed blacks in average earnings.

McCutcheon probably skewed that stat in the favor of Hispanics.

Yes but it's crazy for a player to be essentially locked into a contract three years past his original free agency date unless you get an incredible deal like the contract the Angels gave to Trout. They should either sign a mega deal like Stanton did or agree to a contract that's no more than one year past the original free agency date.

I hope he does but he struggled a lot at the beginning of last year and he has a -0.5 WAR this season and just got benched. Also when he hits free agency he will be 31 and if he picks up his play the pirates will just pick up his option and keep him for one more year

Jordan 8 yrs $25 million

1) Nike paid him more per year

2) His one year $33 million deal with the bulls, totals over 50% of his career earnings from the organization.

What does that have to do with McCutchen? NBA revenue wasn't all that much in the 90's so Jordan probably got as much as he could at the time of signing and then got balloon payments which Andrew won't and McCutchen doesn't have a sneaker deal

Pirates have Austin Meadows coming through the minors right now. If he has a good year in AAA next year, they could potentially check the trade market for McCutchen.
