Has anyone had any children or family that went through the whole EBR Magnet school program? Its getting close to choose which school our child is going to attend, and im 100% sure that he will be accepted into the catholic school that’s in my parish. But were looking at the magnet school options, like Westdale Heights, BR FLAIM, BRCVPA, Dufrocq Academic to save on paying tuition.

Any experiences?

I went to the old McKinley Middle in the mid 90's. It was awful...

The magnet schools are generally pretty solid but the application period was in the spring? How do you plan on just picking a school when the elementary ones are based on the lottery system?

It worked well until high school. Then the kids not in gifted program started being teenagers. Thieving, drugs, etc.

I do realize all high schools have some degree of these things.
I saved nine years of tuition.

I would recommend attempting to get your kid into the Gifted Program. Most of the time, the schools are better all around, and the classes are smaller and more hands on. Your kid has to test into it, though.

If you have to go the magnet route, a coworker of mine said that Westdale is legit. Dufrocq Montessori is also very nice.

K-5 public schools aren't bad. But by 6th grade you'll want to be in the catholic schools.

It's more than just paying tuition for learning. You are paying for the environment. Worth every penny IMHO.

BRCVPA is a great school. Good mix of art and academics. My son is at Sherwood now. The adjustments were tough, but I've been very pleased with it so far.

My kids are at BRFLAIM. We love it. It is doubling in size this year, so most applicants should be able to get a seat next year. The application period is in the fall. Kindergardeners have to pass a test to get in to school. It is not a problem to pass if the kid was in a quality preschool.

Lee High School is magnet only. They have baskeball there, BR High does not.

Nan McCann is the Principal of both BR High and Lee High. The programs are similiar, but Lee is more STEM/dual enrollment focused and BR High is general college prep/Advanced Placement focused.

This year everyone who applied to Lee or BR HS got a seat at either Lee or BR High.

they will have lots of homework and some weird people

do West dale heights (or Dufroq), sherwood, then lee or Baton rouge high .

Gifted is an option too: Buchanan, parkview , glasgow, then Mckinley or woodlawn. Shittier though

My youngest went to Dufrocq for 3 years in the Montessori program. Absolutely loved it. Moved her to be with her older sibs at our parish catholic school. If she was my first or only I would have kept her at Dufrocq longer.

My biggest fear with the magnet, gifted and specialized programs in EBR are that you just never know when they are going to yank a program from one school to another and stuff like that. You also get more student turn over from year to year...less consistency of the other people they are in school with. So, it can be harder to get to know the other parents for that reason. That being said, the parent involvement was fantastic when we were at Dufrocq.

My kids all went through magnet/gifted/talented programs. BRCVPA and BRMHS were excellent. McKinley was solid as well. No complaints from me about the EBR public school system. All went on to successful college careers.

Wife went to Baton Rouge High. Great school back then.....apparently installing the arts students has negatively impacted it.
