KOSSUTH – The long time Kossuth Aggies steer logo will slowly start to change.
The University of Texas sent the Alcorn School District a letter last week concerning the use of the logo.
The trademark request gave Kossuth High School 15 days to contact the Texas school to discuss concerns involving the logo. The university then asked Kossuth to stop using the steer logo, which is extremely similar to the college’s longhorn logo.
Kossuth has used the steer logo since the late 1990s, and although the local school replaced the burnt orange with maroon, it is still a very close depiction of University of Texas branding.
“The university has offered to give Kossuth time to phase out the use of the longhorn logo,” said Alcorn School District Attorney Arch Bullard. “As of right now, those negotiations are still in progress.”
Burnt Orange Nation, a University of Texas fan website, reported in May that the Kossuth school was committing “sacrilege” stating the school’s logo combined the maroon of Texas A&M Aggies and the steer logo of the University of Texas Longhorns.
“This is a big deal,” said KHS Principal Travis Smith. “But, it’s not anything Kossuth faculty, students, parents or fans should be upset about toward the university. The Texas Longhorns are protecting their logo and I understand why. It’s just something we are going to have overcome. It will be a hard change, but one we will work out.”
According to Bullard, the current Kossuth logo will be transitioning from the UT longhorn logo to another steer silhouette logo.

Shouldn't they be able to protect their trademark?

Seems like 75% of high schools use the logo of a college or professional team.
They usually don't give a crap.
But UT is very pretentious so this story isn't surprising.

The Univ. of Missouri sent a cease and desist letter to my HS alma mater, which is an "M" with black and gold tiger mascot.
This is nothing extraordinary.

They have done this in the past. Nothing new.
On the other hand, Bill Snyder lets any high school use the K-State powercat logo for $1 per year.

My high school received a letter back in the late 90s for using Clemson's Tiger Paw. They tried to negotiate a price to continue using it but no dice.

Redemptorist stole Michigan's helmet so bad Michigan shut the school down.

Our school used the exact same State hat and logo, no lawsuit.
It was cool, we could be out of Michigan and we didn't play there
and people would be like, you guys go to State...and we could be in Colorado or Montana on trips...but everyone knew the State logo.. and assumed we were in college.
Our high school ball cap was the same as State.
That Michigan state S has more cache than people think. It's not like the Georgia logo that confuses people or doesn't reasonable...as they showed on that 20/20 show how nobody in the north west Midwest knew what it stood for.
But I tell you...people damn sure knew Michigan State on trips to Cali, Colorado, Texas, Arizona for football.
Thinking we were State and not remotely connected. We lived a million miles away.

Penn State went after St. Thomas More in lafayette for using this logo. And the color was the same. They had it on their basketball court and football field.

If trademarks aren't enforced, they can't be protected.
Downvote all you want, but it's simple trademark law.

Penn state made Prattville Christian Academy change their logo a few years ago.
