And some of them will be in Rio LINK

Eleven U.S. Army soldiers are headed to the Summer Olympics in Brazil next month on a mission that doesn't have anything to do with security. They're all U.S. Olympians, including some who only recently became American citizens.
The size of the contingent is testament to the Army's World Class Athlete Program, a detachment that allows soldiers to essentially train full-time in their sports. Credit is also due to a provision of U.S. law that offers expedited citizenship to immigrants who serve in the armed forces.
Paul Chelimo, 25, is one of four Army runners to make the U.S. team. All four were born and raised and started running in the highlands of Kenya. They won athletic scholarships to American universities. After college, they enlisted in the U.S. Army, which is open to non-citizens with legal residency. Chelimo signed up in 2014.

I didn't realize we were the Soviet Union with the Red Army sports programs.

NASA is recruiting Jaylen Hurd's head to use as the next space shuttle to go to mars.

Seems like a pretty greedy medal grab. I could see if we were somehow using their skill on the battlefield in some unique way, but to just have them train to run the whole time? Seems like weak sauce.

More like PR. "Even our Armed Forces are Olympians."

Maybe we're using their sperm to splice their running traits from their DNA to create super soldier babies.

Of all the dirty arse shite that goes on in the Olympics this seems fairly minor. I'll allow it.

I think that's pretty awesome. I'm constantly amazed by the Kenyan runners. Their "governing body" is so corrupt that they still run qualifying races on dirt tracks. They have to work full time and decide if they are going to buy food for themselves/family or pay a bribe to maintain their eligibility. Just watched a BBC doc on this recently.

Got zero problems with someone joinig the armed forces to gain full citizenship.. Vested interest and assimilation are hallmarks of a quality immigrant population..
