Newbie AR Purchase consensus: M&P Sport II?

I went through many threads about AR's, and it seems the M&P Sport II is the most recommended basic AR.
Any reason not to buy at Field and Stream for 599.98?
LINK
Other than extra Mag's, anything I should buy asap? Scope?
And what's a basic scope going to cost me?

Look at slickguns.com first.
Do you want to shoot long range?

Be a man and get iron sights.
Or an M1A

Solid buy for a first ar. Scope isn't a necessity. Get a couple of extra mags and spend some time shooting it then you can decide what you want, if anything, to change.

I will probably bring it to the local indoor rifle range every couple of months. Will not do much else with it. No long range, no hunting, no other sporting activities.
I'm in the mindset of let me buy one in case the shite hits the fan and I have another defensive weapon beyond pistol/shotgun, that's why I'm looking to keep it simple.

I think you should be good as is. If you're not comfortable with those iron sights then pick a red dot of your choice.

I would recommend a red dot. Check out primary arms for some budget red dots.

Just remember that your optic is useless if it has a shitty base or riser. Don't be stingy when picking one out.

Just looked at their ad and saw the Ruger Ar 556 for same price. Want do y'all think of those? Reviews I read are really positive.

Just bought an Armalite DEF15 for about $650. Solid rifle

I agree with using Slickguns, I got mine for about $100 less.

Checked slickguns and the cheapest m&p sport II is $629 from impact guns.
On a side note field and stream is also selling the Ruger LCP .380 for $200. Seems like a pretty good deal for a new .380 Never shot one so have no idea what they are like although do have a bersa thunder .380 that's not too bad.

for 200 bucks the lcp is a great deal. Great gun to carry if you're wearing gym shorts or something do to it being so light and small. I'll pick one up eventually to wear for that same situation

For $200 it's a good little gun to have/carry. I have slung many many rounds through mine with zero issues.
ETA: OP, that's a solid starter AR. Buy it, take it to the range. You will be more than pleased with the M&P. Based on your usage, I'd slap a red dot on it and call it a day.

I went ahead and purchased my Sport II this week. I wanted to start off with something basic to learn the platform.
Unfortunately, it fell off my boat yesterday.

This is exactly the mindset I have. Although I may take it hog hunting occasionally. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I like the Ruger slightly better. Can't go wrong with either.
