I'm learning spanish, and, living in Chicago, I have a luxury of a plethora of resources to choose from, including people/tutors. That being said, which Spanish speaking country's tutor/accent/style do you think I should choose from, not including Spain? which is considered to be understandable by the most OTHER hispanic peoples?
TIA
ETA: not including spain

Well, let's go based off of your limited information.
Most of the Spanish speakers of the world don't speak Iberian Spanish... That is, they speak new world Spanish considering this population I'm describing is in Latin America.
So, starting there, I would throw out Spain because they use vosotros instead of ustedes and lisp their "S" sounds.
As an American, you will interact mostly with Mexicans, so I would focus there as it is also compatible with the rest of Latin America.
Please note that the island nations and South America (at least the northern part) are known for silent S's to end words. Mexicans articulate that more.

You are in Chicago. Mexican is the only answer.
it will be easy to practice.
Spain is the original, but you won't find any speakers in Chi town. Mexicans abound in Chicago. If you put on airs like you are a "real" Spanish speaker, it would be like the Earl of Norwich talking with youse guys from brooklyn.
to answer your OP, there is no such thing is pure Spanish that is not from Spain. no such thing.
