I was thinking about this. First, El never physically goes to upside down world. Everyone else does because they physically walk through a gate/portal. El's physical body is in the tank & pool every time, so she never physically goes there. She enters a trance and enters a void (for lack of a better term) subconsciously or in a dream like state. Where El goes is pitch black other than the target she is trying to locate. It isn't like the upside down world that everyone else experiences that is based on where they live with trees, buildings, etc. Their version is more of a parellel dimension. El's version is more like a blank nothing other than the target that she is trying to find.

So one of my theories is what if El actually created the monster. Not on purpose or anything. But she is already in a dreamlike trance once she is submerged in the tank, so all of her fear & anxiety combined with her powers create this nightmare type creature in her subconscience that is lurking in the shadows every time they send her to this "void." When she panics after touching it that one time, not only does her freak out cause enough energy to rip open a hole between the real world and a parellel dimension, but it also pulls this monster out of her subconscience and into real life.

That could explain why the monster couldn't be defeated until she chose not to be afraid of it anymore. It was her own fear that created it, it could only be her standing up to it that could kill it. Also when she apologizes to the boys for being the monster, maybe she actually did mean that literally if she finally understood where it came from - her own fear.

This is basically what I believe as well.

I am interested in learning more about the "void" they were using with El to spy on the Russians. Like what is it exactly and who/what created it (and how). And clearly El was special enough that she could access it and Hawkins tried to use that to their advantage and use it/her to spy and gain information.

I also agree with you that if it is something that El created (or "created") than the actual monster is more of her nightmares/fears come to life. So it isn't a "real" monster per se at the beginning, but her making contact with it in the void is what brought it to reality. And her freaking out generated all kinds of power and weirdness and created the gateway into the alternate universe. And it also falls into place with what she said about her being/creating the monster.

I am also interested in the fact that she is "Eleven," and how many more/other kids there are with special powers and abilities. Didn't we see a different kid at some point in the flashbacks, or were they always of just El? I don't know why I remember seeing another kid..

I will likely rewatch the series soon. Loved it.

What if that was the doctors plan all along thinking he could use her to control the monster and kill the Russians?

Also, with it being a dream based monster, as much as they pull from Old School horror movies, that would definitely be the Freddy Krueger type.

That show blew my mind with how good it was.

And confirmed that King's works should be adapted in miniseries form with high production value rather than movies.

Don't remember seeing another kid, but maybe so. We know El's mother was one of the test subjects when she was younger. I'm thinking she had some sort of power too. That would explain why they stole El when she was a baby - they believe the power would be passed down from mother to child. Also, maybe the mother was a little older when they experimented on her, so they couldn't harness her power as well. Stealing El when she was a baby allowed them to work with her at a lot younger age, so they could develope her skills.

Wouldn't be surprised if the mother is involved in season 2. Maybe she finds out about El and snaps back into reality and starts f'n things up.

This series was gold Jerry, gold. I haven't enjoyed a show that much in a long time. Netflix continues to kill it with high quality original programming. It's amazing.

Winona Ryder makes me want to punch her in the face with her annoying voice, but other than that, the show was damn near perfect.
