Can a team with no timeouts throw a legal pass into the middle of the field (say to get into scoring range) then throw a backwards lateral out of bounds to stop the clock?

Is there a runoff? If not, that's better than a spike.

And crazily, if you get a TD scored on you...it's your decision whether to kick-off or receive the next possession.

yes...goes back to the early days of football.
When defense ruled and field position was everything.
When defense ruled and field position was everything.

Since this is kind of a rules thread, let me ask this: Can a team with no timeouts throw a legal pass into the middle of the field (say to get into scoring range) then throw a backwards lateral out of bounds to stop the clock?
It would have to look like it was unintentionally going out of bounds. Intentionally it would be a penalty.
Another fun rules fact maybe not everyone knows. With the new overtime rules, if a team runs a 14 min possession and kicks the field goal, the other team is guaranteed at least one possesion so even if the clock runs out in the quarter, they dont need to rush as they'll get another quarter to finish the possession

That part has me flummoxed

Under what scenario would the defense decline this penalty

But no, if you step out of bounds and then field the ball while part of your body remains out of bounds, the ball is now deemed kicked out of bounds and you get the ball at your own 40 yard line
Clarified it a little for you. You can't run out of bound then come back in and touch it in the middle of the field and it be considered out of bounds.

Yeah, I worded it wrong maybe.
But that's what I mean't.
The kickoff goes to the 2-yard line and is sitting in-bounds but near the sideline.
If you place a foot out-of-bounds and then field the ball...
The ball is deemed kicked out of bounds.
And instead of getting stuck at your own 2-yard line, you get the ball at the 40.
