Putting a Dog Down

My dog's lived a good 14 years. An absolutely gorgeous golden retriever.
But she's old. She's deaf, she can barely see, and she can barely walk. She's not even eating anymore.
It was a very tough call... But I decided it's time to put her down.
But ever since we made the call, I've been feeling nothing but guilt. That's only natural right? I love her but I can't stand to see her suffer anymore.

Thats one of the worse feelings in the world. Sometimes its for the best man, the best way to get over a dog is to get a new one.

I already have two. But it's basically like a childhood friend. We got her when I was 6-7

It sucks, but sounds like you did the right thing. When they stop eating it's definitely time. Sorry for your loss.

I had to put my dog down a month ago. At a certain point it is the best thing for the dog and for you. Does not make it suck any less knowing that but it is the right thing to do.

Sounds like you are making the right decision. Take her to the vet and have it done. It's a terrible decision to have to make. If she was still eating and drinking, I would say to work with her and make sure. When they stop eating is when you know for sure

Yeah we have someone coming to pick her up while we're at work.

Ask yourself this, who benefits from keeping your dog alive for a few more miserable days/weeks/months, the dog, or you?
You know what you need to do. Be a fricking man and do it.

That's actually a good point. I've always said that its selfish to make someone suffer just for your own benefit of having them a little longer. It does suck to make that call though. Can't wait to get off of work and go spend the little time she has left with her.
But it's definitely time. No doubt.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

just put my mama girl down about 4 weeks ago...It broke me up doing it, because she was such a good dog. The vet was crying, the nurse was crying, I was balling like a little girl but it was actually more peaceful than I thought it would be and I knew it was the right thing to do.

Sorry, man, it's very hard. I lost my lab nearly a year ago and I still think of her every day. Whatever you decide, do it for them, not you-don't put them down because taking care of them is inconvenient, but don't keep them hanging on beyond hope because you can't bear to lose them, either. One rule of thumb is to think of three of their most favorite things to do. When they no longer have interest in two of the three, that's a sign. Also, try to find someone who will come to the house so you don't have to stress them out taking them to the vet on their last day.

I could not send my blind dog off with a stranger, we had the vet come to the house and then they took the dog away to be cremated after they put her down.

Bro, put her down. She'd be yelling at you right now if she could. I recently had to do the same. It sucks, everyone knows it's part of having a dog. You'll be alright, I promise

its a sad situation, but its the best thing for your dog. ive had 2 pass on over the last few years, and my wife and i were right there on the floor with them, petting them and talking to them as they went. very peaceful but damn its hard. i cry like a baby when i lose one of my dogs.

This times a million. This is the worst way to do it and not fair to the dog. I told her I would be with her to the end and I was. I urge you to reconsider doing it this way.

Very sorry for what you are going through. One of the toughest decisions I've ever made. In your grief you will have peace knowing you did the right thing.
