Thanks for all the info. We were considering staying in Hood River but then found an opening at Timberline. I may try to hunt up a U-pick fruit place. I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what might be in season early August. I think I'll be too early for apples, but possibly still in good peach season.

I will be down in Newport, August 14-16. When are you going to be down that way?
ETA: Timberline will be spectacular. You can still ski that time of year, too.
