quote:

Don't a lot of restaurants "close for renovations" or add "gratuity policies " around Essence Fest? Maybe it just always lines up that way because it's hot as frick down here and people aren't going out to eat. I thought this was a running joke, but somewhat truism.

It really comes down to a good business decision for most. I know the racial element comes into play in these discussions and there may be a small element in truth to this, but it really is probably the slowest week of the year for many restaurants.

#1 It seem half of the people in Nola head to the beach for the 4th.
#2 People want to grill and be outside over the holiday weekend.
#3 There is a perception among some I know that the parking or traffic will be bad because it's Essence. I wouldn't find this one to be a big deal, but it is a factor with some people.

I have friends who run various small businesses in Nola and the surrounding area that close for the week or at least most of it. It's just a good time to close shop and relax or get out of town.

Took my kids to Dominica and Commanders Palace recently. Both were very kid friendly. I was a little concerned about Commanders but we went early and no problem.

Antoine's is really really great with kids. Can get a private dining room too. Food isn't the best but it's the oldest restaurant in the city and one of the only tablecloth restaurants I know that have Crayons for the kids.
