He got drafted to the NBA, so would think so

He will be a good, not great defender. He has a good wingspan and gives a lot of extra effort. His lateral quickness might be exposed a little bit, but no where near as bad as Jamal Murray.

His defense isn't anything special, but he's a better defender than Murray at least.

He gives great effort which is a significant portion of it

"Hield's 6-foot-9.25 wingspan (a quarter inch longer than Klay Thompson's) and 8-foot-5 standing reach are very good for shooting guards and more than make up for his 6-foot-5 (in shoes) height. Quick, agile and with a long reach, Hield could rack up more steals in the NBA than he did in college" -ESPN
I think he'll be ok

He was a better defender his junior year but he was given a much more expansive, focal role on offense his senior season so they intentionally wanted to to save him for that side of the ball.
So in short the book is out on Hield but he isnt broken mechanically and has had his moments. He is also a solid rebounder for a guard which is often forgotten in analysis on him.
Like most young players I would expect a learning curve but word out of before the draft was it was a focal point of his training. So clearly it is a point of emphasis for him.
