Anyone able to recommend a course within a reasonable distance of downtown...that isn't named Kiawah.

When I went last year I played stono ferry and rivertowne and enjoyed them both. Rivertowne was nicer. Skip charleston national if anybody suggests it. I was too hungover to make my tee time at patriots point but a lot of people had recommended it.

Gotta play Kiawah if in the area

A short drive away (3 hours) is Augusta National.

Coosaw Creek is in North Charleston and is nice. Either of the Wild Dunes courses are good and they are in Mount Pleasant/Isle of Palms. Patriots Point is a good option and is close to downtown in Mount Pleasant. Kiawah has several other courses to play in lieu of The Ocean Course that are much more affordable. I had an internship while in college at Kiawah and found myself playing Turtle Point more than the Ocean Course.

Apparently Patriot's Point lost their greens as a result of the flooding last year. And Rivertowne is closed for a big amateur tournament. Fack.

Turtle Point is closed for the year for renovations

That sucks. I would check out Coosaw Creek or Wild Dunes then. Dunes West may be public as well but I don't recall.

I thought Stono Ferry was a good value. But I would recommend Wild Dunes at Isle of Palms (Fazio design).
