Good women authors are few and far between. Take a look at most of the schlock put out by the publishing industry today (which is dominated by women agents, editors and authors).

but looking for proof i'm wrong and not seeing it yet.

I don't know how that's possible. If you are really "looking for proof" that women can write good books, and can't find any, than you are going to have a hard time accomplishing anything in life.

Not going to read all the responses so I don't know if someone has already mentioned P.D. James - great mysteries. I'm currently reading a series about a private detective set in Roman times by Lindsey Davis (a woman). Very manly protagonist.

pretty much every margaret atwood is amazing. my bookclub is reading only women's books for a few months. We have read quite a few good ones.

NK jesmin - fifth season (this was AWESOME BTW)
The Expedition to the Baobab Tree: A Novel
Stockenström, Wilma (meh)
The Age of Miracles
Walker, Karen Thompson * (decent)
donna tart - secret history (excellent)

Gillian flynn was also good, at least the three I read

Frankenstein and To Kill a Mockingbird are two indisputable classics just off the top of my head. You're an idiot.

The crazy thing is Shelley wrote Frankenstein when she was only 19, if you read again keeping that in mind it is even more amazing. As far as To Kill A Mockingbird goes everyone knows Truman Capote wrote that shite!

You watch your filthy mouth. It's not often I'll go to bat for a female professional, but Harper is one of the few. Now take it back or lose some teeth.

I can't believe that not one of you have yet said the greatest and most influential author of the 21st century: Stephanie Meyers.

What other book did she ever write? Besides that garbage that came out 50 years later of course...

I went to HS with that chick, its crazy she never even thought she would be a writer and just wrote Twilight while she was a bored housewife. Talk about coming through big time for your husband!

Doesn't matter what else she wrote. What else did Herman Melville write? Who else besides your mom did I bang? Who gives a shite? Now apologize.
