Popular music - hard to argue with Elvis Presley.

Question needs to be bit more broad.

Willie Dixon. He pretty much invented the electric blues, which is the backbone of rock n roll (though Robert Johnson is a great answer, too).

Always was and always will be Ludwig Von Beethoven.

His music is still incorporated into todays various genres.

For Rock & Roll only, Elvis and the Beatles.

It's got to be Chuck Berry. Without his work, the giants of rock music like the Beatles and Rolling Stones would have never existed.

Berry didn't invent rock and roll, but his characteristic guitar style and narrative lyrical style shaped the music into what would eventually become serious art music.
