Why Do Some Artists Perform Medleys in Concert?

Is this not one of the biggest rip offs/disappointments during a live performance?

works in a lot of titles in a shorter time
'80s act plays medley of hits, then rest of show is songs from new album being pushed

Which usually results in the audience getting shafted while the artist "treats" it to some (usually) horrible contemporary music.

I saw Disturbed do a medley of covers recently. It was ok. Audience seemed to enjoy it.

They're bored of the old stuff and want to run through it as quickly as possible.

I can understand doing that as a novelty, at least. But to perform your greatest hits as a medley and then give the full treatment to some crummy new material? What a rip.

if they push a current release, especially if they own the record label they'll get some money now instead of spending years in court chasing after it
it's also possible they have a better publishing deal on the new stuff, and that's money you get every quarter

It's understandable. But be upfront about it (i.e. "The Rick Springfield Mostly New shite Tour") unless you're one of the few seriously talented artists who have managed to ripen and grow with age. It's a chachy move and one that would make me not likely to see or recommend their live show or recordings again. Then again, a lot of these folks are probably just trying to cash out.

Sidewalk fans can suck a dick anyway.

It's a way to get the radio hits out of the way but not ignore them completely. So it's disappointing that they play them at all but it's better than the alternative.

Lot of them have a lot of songs and can't fit them all in a 2 hour show.

I believe time first time I ever heard it on record was the Here At Last Bee Gees Live album ('77). They played a medley of some of the 60's songs and it seemed a bit cheap but worked out ok. They ended it with almost all of Massachusetts.
Looking back, damn those brothers were talented!

Dream Theater plays medleys often since many of their songs are 10 minutes plus. It's a good way to get some of those songs in. When each song averages 8 minutes, you'd be surprised how few can be played in even a 2 hour set, especially when a tour is being used to promote a new album.
