I have this problem as well. My dog is 110 lbs, and she can open doors and lift up the toilet seat. She will pass up a fresh bowl of water to go for the toilet.

This happens because dogs smell things individual..They smell shite, but also the undigested food in the shite. So they'll eat/drink anything with something that smells good.
My dog ate up two 55 qt bags of organic potting soil. I think it's from the compost inside. Those were something I didn't think I'd need to put up.
