At a concert to you prefer to hear the hits or do you like the entire catalog?

Also I know this is probably heavily influenced by your interest in the band. Superfans probably just like hearing anything and will enjoy it, probably less so for casual fans.

Here's why I ask. I had only heard of Built to Spill for the first time a few months ago from this board. I listened to their 2 popular albums (KILaS and PFNO) and absolutely loved them. Got busy with other stuff and didn't really dive into any more after that, but those 2 albums really sold me and I decided to buy tickets to their show in Atlanta on Tuesday. In their main setlist they played just 2 songs from both of those albums. Now, I want to stress again that I'm a very casual listener so it's on me that I dont' know a lot of their stuff. And hey, they're the band so they can do whatever they damn well please. I thought it a bit odd though that they wouldn't play more from the albums that really brought them to national prominence.

Also, I enjoyed myself and the show so I'm definitely not complaining. Just thought it curious. Also being a Tuesday night and having to get up early for work on Wednesday I didn't stay the whole time (I'm too old now to be able to party all night and be fine the next day, oh to be young again...). Below is the setlist.

So coming back full circle here....when you go to a show do you prefer to hear songs you're familiar with, would you rather hear a bunch of new stuff you haven't heard before, DGAS either way?

If they are gonna play a couple of hits, then play them. I'd would rather not hear them at all and listen to all new/unfamiliar stuff than hear a 2:00 teaser medley of 5 hit songs. It's like playing just the tip with the audience.

Most of the time I prefer it when a band digs down into their catalog a little bit. This is especially true if it's a band I've seen a lot in the past. I want to hear them play something I never heard them do before. If it's a new band that I'm not familiar with then I don't really care. I don't listen to the radio so I probably wouldn't even know which songs are the "hits" and which ones weren't.

and that totally makes sense. As someone on the opposite end of that spectrum though who only has a limited exposure to the band, I was kinda hoping to hear more that I was familiar with.

Specifically in situations where the band is touring to support a new album, you can expect those songs to take up at least half the set. I'd much rather it be a half and half split instead of playing nearly the full album plus one or two old songs.

I'm actually going to Built to Spill tonight at the Varsity so my expectations can now be set accurately.

I prefer a good mix. Greatest hits are expected but it's kind of a turn off when it's greatest hits heavy. Some acts I've seen seem a little bored on stage when they do a bunch of greatest hits. Eric Clapton comes to mind as an example. Last time I him he did a blues set with a bunch of deep cuts and covers, then did a greatest hits set. He rushed through the greatest hits and after like he just wanted to wrap it up and get back to the bus.

On Tuesday they had 2 openers but only 1 that will be there tonight. The fisrt opener was a folksy trio from good ol athens, GA who I really enjoyed actually. They played about 30 minutes.

Then lenguas something (they'll be there tonight) after that. I'll be honest, I was kind of in a sour mood after this band. For starters, they played a long as set for a little known opening act. Tuesday night show you'd think thigns would be hurried up a little as opposed to a saturday. They played for like an hour and 15 and the lead singer was having some vocal issues it looked like. I was just so ready for them to gtfo and BTS to start.

But that's just me. They weren't bad or anything, I was just ready to get things moving.

Interesting take. Saw Deftones last month at The Orpheum in NOLA.

This is a tour supporting an album that came out only a couple months ago and they only played two songs from the new album during a two-hour set.

That being said, I like a nice mix.

I don't really care. I just want to hear the songs that I like. Some of them may be considered "hits" and some may not.

I pretty much like the entire catalog for most of the artists that I see in concert. I don't usually skip songs on albums.

Something else I like to see at shows are some interesting cover songs. The songs that artists choose to cover tell you a lot about what their influences are and where their heads are at as musicians.

A couple years ago here at Riot Fest, Weezer played a handful of the their non-blue album hits, then said they were going to take a halftime break and had something special for us after the break.

They came back out and played the blue album in its entirety.

That set was awesome.

ETA: Only in Dreams in my favorite Weezer song and of course that's the song the show ended with.

Dammit I waited too long to buy Atlanta Built to Spill tickets and they sold out. And then Stubhub was asking way too much.

Anyway, I like a lot of deep cuts that make it exciting as a fan, but it's good to bring out the big hits here and there to keep the energy up. It's always awkward when you feel like a crowd is getting restless or bored.

entire catalog

depending upon who you´re seeing, that´s asking a lot (time on stage).
