No. This is not even remotely close. You pitch the sequence that gives you the best chance to win no matter how good your hitting is. The winner of the winners bracket is about 85% likely to win it all. So that means you win your first two games and you're the champ. Therefore, you pitch your two best pitchers in games 1 and 2. Since game 2 is the tougher competition, you pitch your top guy in game 2 and your 2nd guy in game 1.
CPM will go 2-1 in regionals until he retires. The only way he'll stray is if you have a bunch of lefties in the lineup of the 2 seed and your #2 pitcher is a lefty.
Paul Mainieri doesn't usually go 2-1. He usually throws 3 or wholestaff in the opener of a hosted regional. This is out of character for him.
Starters in the opener of home regionals:
2008 Jordan Brown
2009 Austin Ross
2012 Aaron Nola
2013 Ryan Eades
2014 Jared Poche
2015 Alden Cartwright
He's only thrown the number two guy once (2013) and you could argue it was because Eades was really struggling at the end of the year.
