It is definitely the best adaptation of any of Crichton's works, but it is still lacking in some respects.

I don't disagree with that. The book is much darker and bleak. I love it, it's on my yearly reread list. With movies, there will always be artistic license because it's physically impossible to transfer everything from page to screen in a 2 hr movie. Hunt for Red October is an excellent example of using artistic license without detrimentally effecting the quality of the story. Speilberg took the source material and created a visual masterpiece while maintaining the essence of the novel.

Unlike say, Sphere, which is probably my favorite Crichton novel, where the film adaptation COMPLETELY MISSED THE POINT OF THE BOOK.
