Spielberg nailed that scene, but didn't put Carry over the tone of the book very well.
It is definitely the best adaptation of any of Crichton's works, but it is still lacking in some respects.
I don't disagree with that. The book is much darker and bleak. I love it, it's on my yearly reread list. With movies, there will always be artistic license because it's physically impossible to transfer everything from page to screen in a 2 hr movie. Hunt for Red October is an excellent example of using artistic license without detrimentally effecting the quality of the story. Speilberg took the source material and created a visual masterpiece while maintaining the essence of the novel.
Unlike say, Sphere, which is probably my favorite Crichton novel, where the film adaptation COMPLETELY MISSED THE POINT OF THE BOOK.
