Wow.

a new report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), which found that the Pentagon was still using 1970s-era computing systems that require "eight-inch floppy disks." Gadgets that have gone the way of the dinosaurs 10 photos: Gadget graveyard Such disks were already becoming obsolete by the end of that decade, being edged out by smaller, non-floppy 3.5 to 5.25-inch disks, before being almost completely replaced by the CD in the late 90s. Except in Washington that is.
The GAO report says that U.S. government departments spend upwards of $60 billion a year on operating and maintaining out-of-date technologies. That's three times the investment on modern IT systems.

Pretty amazing, but the software does its job, so there's no need to change anything.

Doesn't really work with IT. Things that are old enough to warrant the phrase "if it ain't broke," typically have been made obsolete by safer, more performant technology.

Not entirely true

i bet they are a bitch to hack. no one knows those technologies anymore

Perhaps some security advantages? Probably hard to hack if it's on a floppy and wouldn't be affected by an EMP?

Have no fear. Soon a president that thinks you can wipe an email server with a cloth will be taking over.

Documentaries have shown this many times. Don't think the floppy can be hacked.

Can't just go down to Office Depot and buy an 8" floppy drive.....
8" - 5.25" - 3.5"

This isn’t unusual behavior for NASA though, as the space agency always prefers the tried-and-tested to the cutting-edge.

You are fools if you believe this.
