This lady that runs a hardware store in town was stuck in egypt for two weeks during Arab Spring. I bet she has a good story. As I've said before thong, I can deal with a lot but not Muslim rage.

Same here. I'd take war lords in Africa over these guys.

Reminds me of Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money."

Connecting in Turkey as well in about 6 weeks. As of today the FAA has banned all US flights to Turkey and all incoming Turkish flights. Ban lasts until 8/15/16 when they will reevaluate. If they don't lift the ban then, my trip, for one is out of the window Hopefully by October it will be sorted out for your sake.

Man I would not want to visit there right now!

When I visited in December '13 there was some unrest. We had to run away through Taksim after protestors started hurling objects at police during a protest. I was afraid of getting shot or something

It's gotta be way worse now

I have a 3hr layover in IST that's about it. Unless FAA thinks it is unsafe, I think travelers should be fine (to connect). I would not visit Turkey right now obviously.

I won't lie. There is something that makes me want to be there in the middle of this. Then I come to my senses.

Same here. But it's easy to say in front of a keyboard in the U.S. I suppose.

I have a lengthy layover in October, and I'm not changing a thing.

Quoting myself. Now I'm possibly changing.

I originally booked one way fully refundable business class on Turkish from ATH to IAH, via IST.

I now have a backup flight held on Qatar, ATH to IAH via DOH. Longer flight time and more money, but gets us to IAH when we need to be there. The Qatar tickets are also business, and refundable minus 90 euro fee per ticket.

So, would you cross fingers that your Turkish flight goes off without a hitch, or do you go with Qatar? I have about 24 hours left to make this decision.

Qatar, nicer airline than Turkish as well.

You'll be fine on Turkish imo. I'm on a TK flight IAH-IST-ATH on 9/2 and I'm not worried, unless FAA extends its travel advisory. At that point, if I want to change, I will be entitled to a full refund/free change anyway. October should be fine. Rest easy.

I think TK/QR are pretty much on par with their J product (both operate the same aircraft on your route as well). But see if you like one better than the other just go with that one.

ETA: Also IST has the highly rated TK J lounge, but then again, DOH has the Al Mourjan J lounge. Both are awesome. Tough decision for you

Now that would be a story for the ages. You could up-one anybody at a party. "Well, I was there during the coup!" Something cool about being "extracted"

Hopefully you'd live to tell it.

The images of that airport were frightening to say the least. Total anarchy by all. I'm second guessing my statement about "the airport being the safest place". What are they odds. Jeeze

FAA lifted ban today after it was convinced security measures were back to appropriate. Figures to and from resumed.

That's good to hear. I still wouldn't want to be at any airport when this is going down.

dude, I know. I think you're missing the point here... The area is pretty unstable right now. I don't want to travel there.

Just a house fire apparently, but by the time I hit submit something else might happen.

Switched. Their site is much easier to navigate and more informative. For whatever reason, that puts me at ease. Having a 2-2-2 configuration as opposed to 2-3-2 is nice as well. My husband isn't too thrilled about the 16.5 hour flight to IAH though.
