if we don't try to extend the life of Mike the Tiger, then why do we try to extend the life of humans?

Being the "official" mascot of Louisiana State University.

And how would this change his life in any tangible way? Would he think to himself, "Thank God they took that weight off my shoulders." Do you suppose he knows that he is the official mascot?

then maybe he should get a King's retirement now.

Compared to just about every tiger on the planet his entire life has been a "King's retirement".

ything. I assume he could get treatment and still die before 1 year, or not get treatment and die in 4 months

OR he could get treatment and live another 5 years. Prognoses with experimental treatments aren't exact, so let's be optimistic.

Without treatment in 1 or 2 months the tumor probably would start to hurt him and affect his vision necessitating euthanasia.

With treatment the tumor can be reduced and he may get one or two more years while the radiation resistant cells grow the tumor back. Once he is at a state he is in pain that would necessitating euthanasia.

Mike's condition is terminal, he will eventually be euthanized if he survives all the anesthesia for the procedures.

As an LSU alumni I think it best to rely on the expertise of the vets at SVM. They are experts in dealing with Mike. They have is best interest at heart, they will do the right thing by the Tiger.

Just because science CAN extend life does that mean we always SHOULD. How many of us pet owners have had to make the decision to euthanize or spent money to buy a little extra time. Is LSU deciding to extend life because they have the resources?

Depending on where the tumor is, it could interfere with his ability to eat/drink if untreated.

Same thing got my 21 year old Persian. Damned thing grew so fast that she could barely drink water within 2 weeks of noticing the growth on her jaw. It was not painful for her, but interfered with nutrition.

We had to put her down (we didn't have LSU's connections to state of the art cancer treatment - plus, she was 21 years old). Heartbreaking.

Perhaps some way to retire F King Alexander and Mike at the same time?
