Lawyer: Racism key in Mississippi hot car death

Thursday, Blunt was charged with second degree murder after his daughter, 8-month-old Shania, was discovered in the back of his car.
quote:
Less than two weeks before Shania's death, 2-year-old Caroline Bryant died after she was unknowingly left in a hot car by her mother, who is white. Charges are not expected to be filed related to the toddler's death.
quote:
According to Moore, Blunt went to work at 333 Restaurant in Grenada at 9 a.m. Thursday. Blunt left the restaurant at 11 to pick up his girlfriend and take her to her job at KFC. While her parents worked, Shania was going to stay with her grandmother. However, after he dropped his girlfriend off at her job, Blunt went back to his job at 333 Restaurant, forgetting the infant was in her carseat in the backseat.
quote:
"The people making the decisions are white," Moore said Monday. "It's unquestionably related to racism. If this man had been any other color besides black I believe he would be at home, grieving like a normal father and preparing for a funeral.

He's got a point.
The white lady should be charged too.
The white lady should be charged too.

Eh, probably not.
ETA: Wait, just read that the white woman wouldn't be charged. They may have a point here.

His point is because he is black he should not be charged.
However, I agree, they should both be charged.

What is the benefit of charging and imprisoning either one of them?

Que? So the reason he is not grieving and the reason he is not a normal father is because he is black? That sentence is the most racist thing I read in the article.
ETA: The structure of the sentence leaves a lot to be desired.

A white woman a few weeks prior wasn't charged with anything.
They hit this dude with 2nd degree murder.

Well it depends on the circumstances. I mean if they truly forgot, the I don't think the charge is warranted. If they did it intentionally, then they deserve a murder charge.

Agreed.
The thought of intentionally doing it didn't even come across my mind.

I get the story, I just don't agree with the way the attorney is phrasing his story in the media.
ETA: 2nd degree murder seems a bit much if it was a negligent death of some sort. I'm not sure what the criminal code reads in MS, but a "murder" charge for the death of a child due to negligence seems over the top unless there are more details that lead them to think it was intentional in some way.
This quote by the attorney is a bit insensitive as well:
quote:
"It's a miscarriage of justice for him to be sitting in jail," he said.

That is because you're a good person.

Because they failed at the most basic requirement of parenting?

They both should likely be charged...but i need more information to be sure.

I asked what the benefit was.
There is a benefit in locking up violent criminals. We are exposed to fewer possible violent acts.
What good does it do society, or the parent in question, by locking them up at taxpayer expense?

I said they should both be charged.
Murder, and neglectful manslaughter are not ok no matter how you frame the details. There are consequences for our actions.
I never said they should be imprisoned. I am a huge fan of community service as a modality of sentencing. Requiring these two, assuming they truly forgot to go through a psych eval, parenting classes, and speak publically to other young parents could be of benefit and possibly prevent further catastrophes.
In the event either parent intentionally left their child there they should be appropriately treated for underlying psych disorder, and have certain rights restricted in the future. Sadly forced sterilization is not an option.

FYI, the attorney representing this case is the same attorney that is sueing the state for the MS flag being racist...
