Has there ever been a famous artist in Jackson Square/New Orleans?

I am talking about before they came famous. I'm always down there photographing the Quarter and other areas, and I will stop to look at some of the art on display. Some of the stuff is nice work and not over priced, some of the stuff is junk.
I wonder if any famous artist sold art in the Quarter back in the day. I have ought a couple pieces before, not in the Quarter, and found out later the piece had skyrocketed.

Depends on your definition of famous.
I believe he went by Michal, but yes: Michalopoulos.
