TBF, that's a replacement marker put over the old inscription because the old inscription was actually pretty racist. I don't have an issue with this one coming down.

but it's telling that when there were widespread protests over this monument in the 90s no one mentioned REL, or Davis or PGTB.

Well, to be entirely accurate, it only "honors" the deceased who started the riot. No "honor" for the people they attacked, beat, shot and killed.
