Why would you need to worry about that on a conical? You can pull off yeast in a conical.

I wonder if the reviews are of the gen1 version or the new one.
I don't know, but the reviews are from November 2018 to January 2019.

Yeah but there is still some yeast in suspension you would want to drop off, via cold crashing. At least, in my opinion.

Yeah, after you cold crash.

Here's my recipe for my brew tomorrow. Get to use my new mash tun, heat stick, refractometer, and some new hops.
Neomexicanus NEIPA
5.5 Gallon Batch (assuming i'll lose .5 to 1 gallon of wort due to the trub. But, i also have a hop screener for my sterile siphon starter, so maybe it won't be as bad.)
Est OG = 1.072
Est FG = 1.018
Est ABV = 7.1%
Est. Brewhouse Efficiency = 75%
Est. Mash Efficiency = 85% (expecting a 3-5% jump with new mash tun)
60 Minute Boil
Grain Bill
66.1% Pale Malt (2 Row)
25.2% Golden Promise
5.2% Flaked Oats
3.5% Carafoam
Water Profile - Chloride to Sulfate close to a 1:1 ratio. I don't care for my NEIPA's to be overly chewey.
Yeast
Bootleg Biology NEEPAH - Making 1 - 1.5 Liter starter this evening.
Hop Bill
Boil
.5 oz. Nelson Sauvi - 40 min boil - 14 IBU
Whirlpool (165-170 degrees) - Estimated 46 IBU's
1.75 oz. Sabro
1.25 oz. Azacca
1 oz. Medusa
Biotrans - Day 3 of fermentation
1.5 oz. Sabro
1.25 oz. Azacca
1 oz. Medusa
Dry hop 3-4 days
2 oz. Sabro
1.75 oz. Azacca
1.5 oz. Medusa

refractometer
Great piece of kit. Everybody talks about breaking hydrometers...mine lasted for 25 years until I finally broke it. But I'm on my 3rd refrax. That's how much I like them.

This is the first one i've owned (been brewing for 8 years). I've tested it out on packaged beer and bourbon. So far, it's pretty awesome.

Just be aware that they don't give a correct reading post-fermentation. If you know the original gravity you can do a conversion and get it within a point or two, which is good enough for me.
Pretty soon you'll be thinking in Brix or Plato instead of gravity points.

Why's that? So i'll still need to pull out my hydrometer?

Why's that?
A refrax measures the refractive index of the sample liquid. Sugar dissolved in the liquid changes the refractive index (relative to pure water). Pre-fermentation, you can assume that the only thing changing the refractive index is sugar. But because alcohol also changes it, you can't assume that after fermentation begins.

Like I said, you can do a correction for it if you know the OG. Most brewing software will do it for you but if you want, I can post an equation that you can plug into Excel that will correct it for you.

I'm sure beersmith has a refractometer tool. Thanks, though.

Well at least now you know that you can correct for it.

With these Kveik yeasts booming, we’re going to see homebrews that can be pumped out in 5-7 days now. That Monstera Triple NE at Miel fermented with the Hornindal from Omega in like 3 days to 9%. He went grain to service in like 9 days! And temperature was free rise to 90°+!
I don’t know what any of this means but it sounds great. Time to do some research

You guys should look into Tilt hydrometers. Drop them in the primary and track gravity via smartphone or tablet. I absolutely love the ones I have.

Brew day complete, and I gained anywhere from 5-10% efficiency with the new mash tun. The heat stick worked like a charm as well. Hybrid electric is the way to go!

My wife got me one for Christmas. I made a wine kit today and dropped the Tilt in to test it and get a feel for how it works. I will be brewing a barley wine next weekend and plan to use the Tilt in it as well.
It seems to be pretty accurate. When I dropped it in the wine earlier, my hydrometer read 1.085 and the Tilt read 1.086. It will be cool to get real-time SG readings as fermentation happens.

I fell off the wagon with the quickness. I bought a Geissele trigger and now I'm probably going to buy one of these. I hope it works inside a stainless steel conical.
