I think it is moreso an indirect effect of the food than a direct one..you feel better because eating better makes you think you should feel better.It's a very mental thing really..if I eat bad food I feel bad, but only because I know I ate bad food, not because it's causing some chemical reaction in my brain to make me feel negatively.

Sure, the food you take in has absolutely nothing to do with your brain's function.
