Later in the essay, after detailing several moves his family made, Harris shows a remarkable sense of nostalgia for old friends:

Loosing (sic) a friend is almost the worst thing to happen to a person, especially in the childhood years. I have lived in many places, but the last three places have been the most fun and the greatest experiences of my childhood. Although memories stay with you, the actual friend doesn’t. I have lost many great friends and each and every time I lost one, I went through the worst days of my life.

These early writings seem difficult to reconcile with the Harris prose that came later.

Harris wrote about killing “all retards,” warning that “if you got a problem with my thoughts, come tell me and i’ll kill you, because………god damnit, DEAD PEOPLE DONT ARGUE!” He especially despised the cool kids. “It has been confirmed, after getting my yearbook,” he writes, “that the human race isn’t worth fighting for, only worth killing.”

The kid was a walking contradiction. Hated racists, was a racist himself. Hated liars, admitted he was a liar himself.

Just very very mentally ill.

True

According to psychological assessments, Harris was a "cold-blooded, predatory psychopath, an intelligent, charming liar with "a preposterously grand superiority complex, a revulsion for authority and an excruciating need for control"". Harris "lacked remorse or empathy for others, and sought to punish them for their perceived inferiority" and was "motivated by sadism."

He wrote that he would like to put everyone in a super Doom game and see to it that the weak die and the strong live. On the day of the massacre, Harris wore a white T-shirt with the words "Natural selection" printed in black.

He was a psychopath on SSRIs. Any incident of "bullying" against him is way overblown as a cause and no more than any typical school kid goes through and brushes off. The media wanted an easy explanation to point to so they latched onto "bullying" because it was/is just too difficult to grasp the concept that Harris was a complete monster with a corrupt mental makeup who desired murder and mayhem for his own aggrandizement.

Yea...Manson even responded with an album about it pretty much. (Holy Wood)

quote:

The earliest reports about the Columbine High School shooting linked Manson to the tragedy after students reported that Klebold and Harris were fans of Manson, though that was later proven to be false.[1] Many also pointed out that the boys were dressed in trenchcoats, which they believed to be similar to Manson's typical attire. Some early headlines read, "Killers Worshiped Rock Freak Manson" and "Devil-Worshiping Maniac Told Kids To Kill."[2]

Those taking a stance against Manson claimed that his rock group was perhaps the sickest group ever promoted by a mainstream record company.[3] Michael Moore stated in his documentary, Bowling for Columbine, that after the attack, it seemed that the entire focus was that the two killers were motivated to commit this act because they listened to Marilyn Manson.[3]

quote:

Two years after Columbine, Manson was expected to perform in Denver, Colorado at the Ozzfest at Mile High Stadium. As a result, protesters gathered to prevent Manson from performing.[5] One speaker said that Marilyn Manson's music promoted what he called Columbine-like behavior, such as hate, violence, death, suicide, and drug use.[3] The protesters were largely made up of the Citizens for Peace and Respect, an organization that consisted of locals, churches, and Columbine families.[5]

The blame that was placed on Marilyn Manson quickly circulated. The controversy was cited in news outlets around the world

quote:

In an interview, Manson said that being blamed for Columbine nearly ruined his career.[8] He claimed that he had to pursue legal action against those who were so avidly associating his name with the Columbine shooting.[7] He says that he has been blamed for more deaths than any musical artist in history.[1]

Shortly after the Columbine incident, Manson released a new video for "The Fight Song" off his album Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death). Many assumed that it referenced the Columbine massacre by depicting a clash between jocks and goths. Manson denied that there was a connection.[9]

In a 2012 interview, Manson revealed that his album Born Villain, which would be released that year, was named partially due to his blame for the Columbine shooting. He said that the title is perfect because he became vilified by society.[1]

Yes. He was on fluvoxamine, which he was prescribed as part of court-ordered anger management therapy.

I agree with somewhat some of this, but it's not like the kid was mega popular at school. He was short, frail, turned down by girls to prom, whined how he couldn't get laid a week before the shooting, and then ultimately died a virgin.

I don't think they were bullied like you see in movies with kids being pushed into lockers. But they were definitely made fun of for how they looked.

So not to sound too macabre here, but is there a definitive documentary about the 2 guys? Something like "montage of heck" about cobain for instance.

I don't know a lot about columbine or harris/klebold other than what most people my age know, which is essentially just what I remember from when it happened and watching the news and whatnot. But I'd be interested in watching an actual doc about it that goes deeper into their lives and mindsets.

just avoid "Bowling for Columbine" it's the most known one out, and it's from Michael Moore.

I always wondered how the parents coped with this. How do you function in society with people knowing your kid did this?

Yeah, plenty on youtube and even a Zero Hour documentary that re-enacts the whole thing.

Most of the documents (diaries, homemade vids )are online, and there are snippets of the actual 911 call placed from the library on YouTube where you can hear H/K in the background shooting hooting and hollering and telling kids to get out under the table. It can pretty hard to listen to.

One of the best AMA's on reddit was with one of the friends of the shooter. Pretty eye opening.

I never said he was the most popular guy at school, but he did have a number of friends. He was pretty normal in terms of the number of friends he had. He went to high school football games and dances. They were both going to prom. Real loners don't go to prom, much less have dates to prom. Real outsiders don't go to high school football games. Real mal-adjusted super-dorks of thy kind he was made out to be aren't described as avid sports fans, which Harris was. He wasn't this poor picked on trench coat kid that the media said. He was a kid with a pretty normal social life. It's just that he was a physcopath.
