Did he say independent?

That could mean anything. If he had said "indie," I'd be concerned.

Looper, Brick and Brothers Bloom are all fantastic. Brick is a work of genius. Looper is utterly unique and fascinating. Brothers Bloom is heartwarming, charming and original.

Perhaps you should watch them all.

Then check out the episode "Ozymandias" of Breaking Bad. The man has complete control of his craft. He's directed major movie and TV stars. He's dealt with Adrian Brody and Bruce Willis, both notorious for being pains in the arse on set. He's done small and big budget and can take visual effects to interesting levels of creativity.

He will inject real character into this movie. It won't be Episode VII, which simply served as fanfare. This will be a great film.

Maybe it will be like the Fly episode of Breaking Bad. Nothing happens and all the critics pretend it's the best episode yet.

To be fair, he directed one of the best television episodes ever. That said, it's obviously not something that will prepare you for directing Star Wars.

This doesn't make me feel good but to be fair ESB was the most dialogue driven and complex of the 3 originals and most consider it the best "film".

Put it this way, J. J. Abrams read Johnson's script and said that he wanted to direct it.

And directing Community won't prepare you for directing two Captain America coma and two Avengers films, yet that seems to be working out quite well.

I think what he means is it's smaller in scale. I think a large portion of the movie will simply focus on Rey and Kylo's training with Luke and Snoke respectively, while the First Order goes after the Resistance, as the rest of the galaxy falls into chaos with no more central government.

Really, I don't know how they're going to do an opening title crawl unless they start the movie with characters that had nothing to do with TFA plot, because it clearly has to take off the second the last one left us. So in that manner, it will be like Empire, but I don't expect any grand battle in the movie.
