If we hit on two picks in the first three rounds, it absolutely could transform our D in the next 1-2 years.

That's a big if. And assume we do, by the time those guys are impacts enough to transform this defense, the Brees window will have all but been shut. Honestly the only "impact" guys I see in this draft that would most likely be available are Lawson and possibly Rankins. To use your Von example. You're right he was the #2 overall pick, and honestly that makes a huge difference. To make that comparable you'd have to assume that Ramsey, Bosa, Jack or Buckner would be available, as those are the only defensive players even close to his level now and as a prospect back when. And those guys are not falling to 12. (If Jack does that's because about 10 other teams felt his medical red flags were to worrisome, and that bothers me.)

I will also say this. Let's assume our first round defensive pick takes 2-3 years to fully blossom (not an outrageous claim by any stretch). Let's also say in another reality we take Lynch, and he sits behind Brees for 2-3 years. If they were both to reach their potential after a couple of years I guarantee Lynch would be more valuable to this team than said defensive player. And said defensive player would not have done enough in those first couple years to truly change this team to the point that it gives Brees one more shot at a SB in a possibly already closed window.

We could get a guy that makes a significant impact right away. It happens all the time.

It's not extremely likely, but it's a lot more likely than Paxton Lynch having any significance for this team ever. And certainly not in the next 3 years.
