I'm getting AT&T gigapower installed next Tuesday and think I'll need to upgrade to a gigabit wireless router. Any suggestions?

What are the monthly rates looking like for that? $100+?

$70 for the gigabit Internet service and $120 for gigabit service and TV (1 box).

Do you have any devices in your house with Gb receivers..?
I ask because I had to buy a dongle for my laptop, when I bought my router

ETA: This is based on wireless..If you're all wired (which you should be, any PC in the last at least five years, should have a Gb NIC and the same for the router)

I just upgraded to this one from a $100 TP Link and its overkill

I don't think so... unless my 2015 iMac does, which I doubt. Will need to to look into that as well...

You're looking for at least AC wireless and 100/1000 internal

Go get the Apple Airport Extreme, or Time Capsule. Both awesome, and with the TC you get the backup features as well.

Yeah... before more people just throw in the name of their favorite router, the first step in finding a router for a Gigabit connection is determining which ones are capable of WAN to LAN throughput even remotely close to a gigabit. While most routers have Gigabit ethernet, and AC routers can provide bandwidth beyond a gigabit if they support at least 3 spatial streams, what is not readily advertised is the hardware limitation determining how much incoming bandwidth it can handle from the modem. That number used to not matter because it's always hundreds of megabits. Anyone without gigabit internet doesn't have to worry much about that number.

Luckily, SmallNetBuilder evaluates the shite out of all of our favorite consumer routers, so you can look at this handy-dandy list ranking them by WAN to LAN throughput. LINK

You'll notice that consumer routers still aren't quite hitting the magic 1gbps mark, but a few come acceptably close. The Nighthawk sits at the top of the list. And you can probably just stop there, because the Nighthawk is pretty much superior in every other meaningful category as well.

EDIT: Another thing you'll notice on that chart is how far down the list the Apple Airport Extreme is. Good thing you didn't buy that one yet.

EDIT2: lol at downvoting absolute fact. Some of you people are irredeemably dumb and sad.

Like I said, I just upgraded to one and while it is nice, it is about $90 more than an average user would need

My advice is only get an Apple router if you have a majority of Apple devices. Even then its really iffy. This is coming from someone that has 3 macs, 3 iPhones, 2 iPads, and 3 Apple TVs in his house and uses an Airport Extreme and Airport Express as a bridge. When I upgrade my router it won't be made by Apple.

It's not always about throughput, though...

I've installed them all -- from Linksys (before Cisco), to Linksys (during Cisco), to NetGear, TPLink, D-Link... And the only brand I have found to remain reliable in the home to small-business arena are the Apple products.

Plus, the fact that I can extend the wireless network just by adding another access point, install and manage all of the Airport devices from a single console, and connect speakers to the extensions around the house... Well, it's a winner for me.

Show me a device ranked higher than the Airport on SNB that has those same features and let's really compare.
