Usually, I don't buy the "must win your conference" argument

Like back in 2003, I thought it was right that OK only dropped 2 spots when they lost the Big 12 Title game to K State. They were still one of only 3 one loss teams, and they had been #1 all season. I think K-State had 3 losses and wasn't in the top 10.
But that's A LOT different than the current scenario with UGA, since the actual conference winner has a better record!

until it works in your favor, just like the reast of this board

Not to mention, UGA didn't even participate in the game yesterday. At least OU got to the game by winning their division. UGA's huge loss to Tenn can't be overlooked.

sorry, I disagree, I thought to be fair it should have been lsu vs usc. I think you do have to win your conference. Its just irrational to say your the best team in the nation when your not the best in your conference.

Not at all. I just think it's entirely different when the actual conference winner is still in the mix - and with a better record. If LSU were 9-4 as champions, I would be pulling for UGA to get in to the game.

Chicken, do you think that UGA's argument would be stronger if they had played us and lost?
I was against Oklahoma in 2003 (because they lost their conference). I thought that LSU and USC had both earned the right to play in the big game. I still think that and would think that if the roles were reversed (i.e. UGA just won the SEC-CG, and we were higher in the BCS looking to back in).

Les may owe the Pac 10 an apology. He said the teams in the SEC have to go thru a Championship Game, which is not the case in the Pac-10 and Big 10. If UGA goes, then evidently that is not the case. UGA over LSU would be an injustice.
UGA is like LSU last year. Hot team, but not Conference Champ (not even in the SECCG). They win their bowl, they should finish #3, EXACTLY like the Tigers last year.

See, I think that's irrational. Just look at the NFL. They let wildcard teams in the playoffs.

I'm not hypocritical. Mark it down, I don't think anybody from the conference should represent the SEC (and I really don't care anything at all about how other conferences handle business) in the BCS-CG, except the champs. If by some statistical anomaly, you don't win the tie-breaker and can't get into the game, be happy with your incredible at-large BCS berth, but I don't think you have the moral authority to play in the big game when you are an at-large selection and not even representing your conference as champions.
Maybe I'm sentimental and old-fashioned, though.

I don't know about "moral authority". I'm just saying that there are situations where a non-conference winner should still play.

problem was OU had been destryoed in their title game and USC had lost in OT. sound familiar?

But K-State wasn't in the picture at all. I DO think it would have been an outrage if K-State had had a better record than OU.

quote:Not every team is in a conference, nor should they be required to be so. The BCS treats all games equally--it does not put an arbitrary emphasis on 8 or 9 out of 12 games because they're labeled "conference games." (USC didn't win the Big XII in 2003, either, so why should they have gotten in over OU?)
I think you do have to win your conference.
quote:Oklahoma was the best team in their conference. They were 8-1 vs. Big XII teams. The next best was 6-2. "Champion" and "best team" aren't necessarily the same thing.

It's a 12-game season, not an 8-game season. Base nothing on conferences.

But they don't let wildcards in INSTEAD OF THE FREAKIN' DIVISIONAL CHAMPS.

I am with Jersey. I don't think he is saying UGA should not be considered, but there is no rational reason to put UGA over LSU. LSU has the better record, tougher schedule, and less humiliating losses

And I'm saying that UGA SHOULD NOT go this year. But in 2003, K State simply was not in contention. Rightly, that should not and ultimately did not preclude OK from establishing its position vs teams from other conferences.
