Not Van De Velde but who was the other guy at an Open Championship? He could not get out of a bunker and past the slope into the bunker. I believe he hit two or three that rolled back to his feet.
He was either leading or threatening. He ended up having to hit out sideways I believe.

I wouldn't even call it a collapse.
it was a collapse contained in a 3 hole span... he even admitted it on the course at the time

As Spieth and Greller made their way toward the 13th tee, Spieth turned to his caddie and tried, in the moment, to be brutally honest. "Buddy, it seems like we're collapsing," he said.

Spieth was dealing with glass greens.
Glass greens had nothing to do with Speith's quad on 12

August seems right now to be an Achilles Heel for Rory like the French Open is for Federer.
Rory regularly contends at Augusta and his game matches up with the course... just needs to tighten up the driver stop missing left so much and he should have a solid game for Augusta. Federer doesnt have the game for clay

His choice on 12 should have been one more club no matter what...hit it in the back bunker and take bogey. He wins if he does that.
if he does that then he's tied with Willet at the time. Easy to say that after when you see how the remaining holes play out but not many pros are taking bogey and conceding a lead. I don't have an issue with club selection or shot choice. He just hit a really poor shot. Everyone was bailing out left over the bunker and he doesnt get around on it and misses way right and short

Thomas Bjorn at Royal St Georges.
Was in control late in 4th round until the bunker disaster. Happened at the 15th or 16th, iirc.

One needs to rewatch the Van de Velde madness before we all get on Spieth LINK It was true madness and Peter Alliss is a God amongst men
The commentary during that debacle may be the greatest call in sports history.

Yeah referring to himself with the royal we is weird.

He also refers to "we" when he is winning. He considers his caddie and he as a team. So I don't have a problem with it.

Everyone is making way to much out of this . He had one bad hole in s week he really wasn't at the top of his game. He was leading for three rounds with some of the worst winds they have had there.
Well the only way you're going to have a collapse is if you've played well enough to be in the lead up to that point. You can't talk about his collapse and simultaneously disregard it because he played great for 3 days.
Honestly I'm surprised so many people want to sugar coat the damn thing. He fell apart on 12 and it cost him a major. When the best players in golf history have 18 and 14 majors, losing one when you've got a 5 stroke lead with 9 holes to play is a pretty big deal. It's not like you're going to win another 20 or so majors to lessen the blow.

Yeah, he collapsed. Its not like he just had a few bogeys and allowed Willett to catch him.

Everyone seems to be forgetting the bogies on 10 and 11 before that quad at 12.
It was a bad stretch of holes, not just a collapse on a single hole

How in the world he was in sole possession of the lead for three straight days with as many bad shots as he hit I'll never understand. It's a testament to how great his short game has been. He was playing far from his best golf yet he held the Masters lead for three straight days. I find that very impressive.

5) Mickelson '06 US Open - needed par on 18 to win (no gimme), bogey to tie and playoff w/ Ogilvy. And Phil made double.
Actually, Phil needed only bogey to win outright. He could have hit 5-iron, 5-iron, wedge and 2-putt to win, but he pulled driver. Bones should have ripped that driver out of his hands and wrapped it around a tree.

It was very impressive. The conditions called for grinding it out and that's what he did. However he just seemed a bit "off" in that he really stumbled down the stretch Saturday and throughout the tournament, every time he seemed to get a little separation, he did something to come back to the field. He was doing a lot of scrambling and sometimes you're flirting with disaster when you're doing that. His meltdown/collapse was probably inenvitable in some form or fashion, I just never expected it to be a quadruple bogey.
Let's not forget that Smylie Kaufman was hacking around and I bet that didn't help Spieth's mojo.

Not correct.
Phil doubled, and lost by 1. He needed par to win, bogey for a playoff.
