It was based on the Horten 229 (Ho 229) prototype sorta kinda, the set designers then took liberties with it.

Paul Fournet used to have a P-38 at Lafayette in the late 60s and 70s until it crashed in 74.

My dad worked for Grumman so we were 100% fanboys of Grumman aircraft such as the Wildcat and Hellcat (pictured below)
