I think "technically" anyone born 1981-2000 is a Millenial.

I feel like most of this thread is made up of early Millennials (1981-86) trying desperately not to be labeled as a "Millennial."

That's what's so funny. They don't "feel" millenial. And I get what they're saying, but there's always gonna be a big difference between a 33 yr old and a 20 yr old.

Fwiw, I'm 1980. Label me what you want. I don't care what you call me. Because I feel like a 1320-1340 Englishman. I like longbows, hate the French, and swear fealty to His Majesty Edward III.

Does trading original Garbage pail kids stickers at recess get you into Gen X?

Yes?

You're not a millenial.

I'll go one further. If you ever jacked off to an episode of Wild On E!, when it was still hosted by Jules Asner, because internet wasn't even really a household thing yet, you cannot be classified with goddamn millenials.

So i grew up thinking I was generation X.

Hell, I didn't have a cell phone or an email until I went to college.

Same here. Also didn't have Internet access until I was 18 or 19. Born in 83, and like someone else said I remember hearing stuff back then about being Gen X. I never paid a ton of attention to it though.

My brother was born in the late 80s, and that's just different people.

I forgot about that angel. Mmmm
I almost ruined my dads TV by holding a magnet to it. Someone told me a magnet would make Playboy channel come in clear. That person lied.

It goes by 20 yr increments

1980- Gen X cutoff
2000 - Gen Y cutoff
After 2000- millenial

Not rocket science

Where is the line drawn (year)?

It is largely subjective and that year is within the "disputed" boundary area.

"Generally" (a terrible word, but it is what it is) - generations run about 18 years. There are arbitrary distinctions, though. For example, the "Baby Boom" is widely considered to have started on January 1, 1946 - using a traditional 18 year run, that would have covered all children born through December 31, 1963 (also, roughly corresponding to the assassination of JFK - about 5 weeks earlier). Thus, many consider the start of "Generation X" the "10th" generation of Americans - to have begun on January 1, 1964. 18 years - again, would have run through the end of 1981 - or roughly the first year of the Reagan Administration.

Some will end Generation X a little earlier or a little later, but 1981 is a genuine "cusp" year. Those kids would have been 19 or 20 when the September 11th attacks occurred - which is the defining events for millenials.

So, if the "Greatest Generation" is about 1910 through 1927, the "Silent Generation" from 1928 through 1945, the "Baby Boom" from 1946 through 1963, "Generation X" from 1964 through 1981, the the "Millenial Generation" was from 1982 through 1999 - therefore your friend is in the last cohort of Generation X.

Just my $0.02.

??? Generation Y IS the Millenial generation.

And - fair enough - some folks do start from a 20 year baseline. But, you have to tweak A LOT of boundaries that way. Works for Millenials (~1980 to ~2000) - definitely doesn't work for Baby Boomers or Silent Generation.

Like I said, largely subjective and will vary from one generational scholar to the next.

I was born in 1979 and I in now way consider myself an Millennial. In fact being called a Millennial I take as an insult.

You're pretty clearly a Generation X, even by the broader standards, albeit in a late cohort.

For good reason. "Millennial" is the worst insult in the English language.

I don't think so. I think the earliest Millenial cohort is 1982. But opinions do vary.
