Hyenas, while neither cat nor dog, are actually more closely related to felines than canines.

Now, to answer your question.

If the hyena gets a bite, it's over. They have a crazy strong bite.

But I think a fully grown western cougar slits him open.

The jaws on those nasty frickers are unreal strong. They can plow through solid bone with their teeth and engage lions all the time, which are much larger than cougars.
