I became a Godfather last night. What was expected of you and what have you done?

Yes.

You hangout and light some candles and shite at the Christening, have to buy extra presents on birthdays, Christmas, and Easter...and have to take the kid in in-case both the parents die.

No biggie...

Yes. You get to buy the kid presents and spoil him/her. If the parents die, you get the kid.

It's really fun, for the most part.

I'm not Catholic, so I was automatically taken out of the running for my nephew. His catholic uncle is very involved in the church, so it made more sense for him to be the godfather anyway.

For you, the baptism was last night? That seems a little odd. You do nothing unless you are actually religious. For most people it is nothing more than a title, and I think it is typical for godparents to never see their godchildren. You technically are supposed "to guide their growth in the Church." Have fun with that.

If Catholic, youre gonna have to take the class for the child's baptism. Outside of that, just spoil them and give them gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Both of my godchildren call me Paran.

Yes. I'm known solely as Paran (Parrain) to my nephew.

Mostly providing guidance and support. He's grown up so he can handle himself.

Yes. Nothing "different" than I would usually as I'm an uncle. Would still be buying gifts, etc...

Maybe when he gets older I'll do some different things but as a youngster there isn't much expected.

I've got three goddaughters with my first godson on the way. I spend time with them and babysit when asked. I am supposed to help raise them in the Catholic faith.

There is no obligation to take them in if the parents die - that is a guardian and designated in the will. But if the parents die, I am supposed to make sure they are raised Catholic even if I'm not the guardian.

If one doesn't get asked to be the Godfather it probably means they thought you would take the kid to gentleman's clubs or something.
